How fast can you go before a cage is needed?

I know that sanctioning bodies are different, but how fast, E.T. wise and MPH, can you go without a cage?
1/4?
1/8?

Does it matter if its a NHRA track or a IHRA track?

Anything faster than an 11.5 in the 1/4 requires one at NHRA sanctioned track I go to.

Most tracks require a 6-point bar after 11.49 and lower in the 1/4,.....and somewhere around 7.4 / 7.35 in the 1/8th. This applies to both IHRA & NHRA sanctioning bodies.

The cut-off for NHRA use to be 11.99 in the 1/4, but they lowered it to 11.49 a few years ago.

Thanks for the link Keith. So the 8 point roll bar, not cage, is good for 8's in the 1/4? I'm guessing the cage would be a real pain in the butt with a street/strip truck. But the roll bar setup they have doesn't look like it'd be that bad, just the front door bars that you'd have to climb over.
