Why are my Headers RED???? (Temperature Rising CONT...)

Ok so I have been having some trouble with my truck lately with it not quite running right (see "Temperature Rising" ) So this past week end I climbed underneath to try and examine some things. First off I now know that most of my bushings are shot and so are my shocks. ( BTW has anyone ever had their Bilsteins replaced under warranty. They are supposed to have a lifetime warranty and they were just put on about 40k ago...if that) Second these trucks have a crazy exhaust system. It is like Dr. Suess or something... 1 cat 2 cat 3 cat aww heck why not 4. Well I noticed something else that struck me as unusual. My headers are this like RED color. It kinda looks like rust but if they are that rusty then why isn't the rest of the exhaust as rusted. Also this looked alot more red than the normal rust color. I am not sure what to make of it but figured it may have something to do with why my truck is heating up. Also I have narrowed it down to the truck really having a problem when you go over 60. I drive in the city on a 35mph road about 15 miles a day and so most of the time don't drive the highway so not sure when the problems started. I will try and post a pic of the headers tonight. Almost looks like they have been heating up too much?? My friend had a exhaust back up on him in his Bronco and when he opened the hood the headers were glowing red and so was the cat. This led to the entire thing burning to the ground. This scares me especially because of the fuel crossflow problem(dealer is being an @$%#^&* about replacing the pumps. Bottom line I need about $3k and lots of help. So if anybody wants to help(with either) let me know.

Head to your local muffler shop and have the catalytic converters checked out. Sounds like they might be clogged up. Are you getting any nasty, kinda rotten egg smell from the exhaust? How about black soot around/inside the ends of your tailpipes? If so your cats need to be replaced or just gutted :D.

Something else to check out.. How much timing to you have in the engine? Ive seen cars with the timing set too low that the headers glow red from the heat. If your timing is set wrong somehow, like to 5*, it could be discoloring your headers. Just a thought. :D

Thats kinda what I was thinking that my cats were clogged. I will throw some pics up tonight so you guys can see what I am talking about. As for gutting them I am unsure. I wanna keep it legal but don't have the $$$$ to shell out for the xpipe with cats and my inspection is now due. Hows that for timing. BTW is there any way I can check the timing myself or do I need a special tool or something? As for the Bilsteins I was referring to the Bilstein warranty. They say lifetime warranty but I am trying to figure out how it works like you know wether or not you have to send in your old shocks after you replace them and then get re-imbursed or ....

get those pumps fixed

Your having a fuel feed problem and running lean. That crossflow pumps i would say is the heart of the problem. I would be carefull driving it hard. Get the pump problem fixed and i bet all your problems get solved. Just my two cents for the day.

Where Y'at Blitz, Yea. Check the timing. It should be at 10* BTDC. Put a little white out on the 10* mark on the balancer before you start. You got to pull the spout (grey think by the master cyl.) before you set the timing. Remember to replace the spout after your finished. If the timing is way off it can make you overheat & make the exhaust glow red. I hope its that ez for you to fix this problem.

you know you may have just touched on the key to all of my problems . I have been to the dealer 3 times to get the Fuel recall done and I am still fighting them to replace the actual fuel pumps. Right now my rear tank pumps approx. half a tank into the front when I drive it from full. That is just rediculous. I hope that this is the cuase of all of my problems but at the same time I hope it isn't if the dealer won't fix it because I hear the fuel pumps and regulators are expensive. it would definatly account for the chugging feeling and the hesitation and the poor gas mileage and if you starve the engine for gas then you get improper detonation and well by jove I think he's got it. Guess I will be calling them again. Does anyone have all the info on the fuel pump recall for 93's. Actually all recalls for 93's would be helpful.
