What kind of a difference will heads make?

I was just wondering because i have seen some posts where heads are being changed? What would some good quality heads cost & what kind of difference would i see running a powerdyne? Have run a 13.3 on a good day. Thanks guys. Curiosity = performance

Jimmy when I was running a powerdyne it went 13.1 with the stock heads and cam then I changed to some edelbrock 6025's and a custom cam motion roller cam and my best time was 12.2 :D

I can only report results I saw from my own head swap, GT-40 to
Edelbrock. It wasn't a huge difference, maybe 20 horse or so. I think a good SD cam and heads would show the best results.

My truck had the normal bolt ons when I did the swap:
1.7s, longtubes w/ offroad, pulleys, and that was about it except for an ignition setup

I dont run a blower, but, the best time I got with the unported stock heads and cam was a 14.33. With the T/W heads it picked up to a 13.67. When I added the CompCam it went 13.27 @ 101.55. Heads and cam can make a BIG difference! :D

In all reality you really SHOULD change cam when you go to a stouter head. Cam Motion makes a great cam. The stock cam with it's dinky valve lift(.414 w/1.6's) doesn't take advantage of the superior flow at higher lifts. Just from a bigger cam you'll see increased lift, and not neccessarily any drop in torque. Even with a .500 lift cam you're passing your peak valve lift(stock cam) twice as often, so the ability of the head to flow is alot better. I think with even stock heads you'd see a considerable increase in performance with a good custom cam. I don't plan to invest in a cam until I get a set of heads though. And even then I might wait just from the fact I plan on addin a turbo which makes the cam obselete depending on the grind.

On the other hand, speed density cams have a tendancy to also be turbo friendly. This stems from the fact that the majority of speed density cams have a relatively large lobe separatoin(114*) which you'll find most turbo cams have.. Ok got off topic(I like to type :D)..

If you do heads, splurge for a cam..

I went from a 15.3 bone stock to a 15.0 with ported iron GT-40. Exhaust, pulleys,& cold air intake has dropped it to a 14.1 with the stock cam & 1.7 Cobra rocker arms :tu:

What kind of $$$$ do you guys think it would cost for some good heads & a custom cam & how much would they affect daily driving? An estimate will do. Thanks;)

I would say you could do everything for around $1500. Figure 950 for TFS heads, a custom Cam Motion cam is around 300-350 I believe. Gaskets and head bolts another 150.. So right around $1500 without rockers.
