What is the purpose of the air pump?

My air pump is making noise. I suspect the bearings are shot. So my choices are to bypass with shorter belt and just leave it on the truck or replace the pump. I think the replacement part is only around 45.00. should i have any concern about eliminating the pump? Thanks

Paul if you still have cats you will need to keep the pump it helps to warm the cats up on a cold start

If you live in an area with emission tests then you will need a new pump. I've had the pump bypassed for over a year w/ the cats still on with no problems.

It's designed to provide additional oxygen to help lower hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide levels. That's all that I know it does.
