What is a good radar and laser detector besides V1?

Hi,
I dont have enought money to buy the Valentine One Radar so could someone give me some suggestions on which radar to purchase?

Apparently...none

A recent test article I read (Car & Drvier - Feb. 2002 - page 70) had the V1 smoke all the others. Wasn't even close.

V1- score 97
Escort Passport 8500 - 73
Bel 980 - 61
Cobra XR-1050 - 43
Whistler 1780 - 35
Uniden LRD 987 - 34

BTW, that is the edition with the new GT40 on the cover!

The detector just detects the radar. It doesn't defeat the radar or laser. The V1 is the best I have used. It has saved me from many many tickets. As long as you know how to read it and don't come across a cop running instant on and you're the only one in the area, or using laser and you're the one he happens to hit, you will do fine.

funny slapshot, Ive yet to find a cop that can beat my v1 :D

V1 all the way, its fairly easy to get around goober patrol with it.

Here is the latest test of high end detectors by Radartest.com.

In there test the Passport 8500 kicked the V1 butt. Not even close. I have an 8500 and it really picks up KA, which is the gun of choice around here, far away. I haven't even had a close call. And it retails for 300 and I found a guy selling them on ebay and send him an email direct and got one for 250.00. A good deal on a good detector. They want too much for the V1 and it is NOT user friendly according to the report. The 8500 is easy to use. I read a report on it and was able to program mine the way I wanted it without ever looking at the manual.

couple probs with that report Noelster... all the big publications have sided with V1, however the smaller guy, who is most likely "endorsed" picks the 8500, I think it comes down to who do you trust on reviews and such.

As far as being hard to program and/or use, my V1 is a piece of cake, ask at the next BnF and Ill show you, its no big deal at all. I did not even open the package that has the manual in it.

To each his own though, both detectors are good. If you use the detector and some common sense, you can outsmart sheriff Buford t wannabe justice.

I also have the Passport 8500 and i have yet to be stopped ...... It has saved me many of times..... My Dad also use to get about 2-4 speeding tickets a year and for the last year he hasnt got one becaues of this radar...........

Another satisfied V1 user here. 2.5+ years and not a glitch. It has saved my butt more times than I can even count in that timeframe. Not that I speed on purpose so much, rather the truck has sooo much torque you're over the speed limit almost constantly with next to nothing on throttle input. The V1 keeps me cognizant of my speed because there are times you can't run the speed control.

The radartest.com report is somewhat suspect. Apparently the reviewer tried to get V1 to pay him a pricey sum to 'review' the V1. When Valentine refused, guess what showed up. The story used to be posted on the V1 board, but I just looked and its no longer there. Personally I've been reading the C&D radar tests for many years, and I'd have to believe them (no matter who won) over a web site.

I'm not knocking the Passport 8500; it's kind of like the difference between a Dodge R/T and a Ford Lightning...do you want a nice ride, or the best available?

Your mileage may vary...I just thank God we live in a country that allows us a choice!

i use a cobra 9500 detector, yes it only warns you of the radar. but i also have it connected to a phantom scrambler. the local county mounties have tested it twice with mounted and hand held laser and have certified it to work. its not the detector, its the scrambler you want. got mine on ebay for $69.00 but haven't seen them got that cheap in about 2 years. but the scrambler is the best way to go. i used the detector/scambler combination in my 97 cobra and now in my 2000 ltg. it is the only way to go. in atl,ga im known as fast97/cobra, or whtltg/lightning with a heavy foot and never a ticket. knock on wood, this continues!!

one of the roomates has a passport 8500, its saved his butt more than once. He has gotten one ticket with it, but when you're doin 95 in a 70 its kinda hard to slow down fast enough to not get nailed. I havent poneyed up the money for one yet, I just try to let other people that wanna drive fast get ahead of me about a mile, then I speed to up to however fast they're goin and let them find the cops first (its worked so far on the turnpike<crosses fingers>).

Have to agree with Noelvm
The passport 8500 is a great unit . SeveraL OPPORTUNITIES, NO TICKETS!!!! And at about $300.
Jerry:eek:

The Honda Civic is the best car in the world! It gets me from point A to point B and I've never gotten into an accident.

Then I drove a Lightning . . . end of story.

Try a Valentine One and you'll discover that everything else just makes noises and looks pretty at night. There is NO comparison and I've used the 7500, 8500, 980 and the V1, along with a host of other crappy boxes.

Hmmm....it detects instant on and hand activated laser??? Ya right.....I laugh when I squeeze the trigger on the laser and watch the driver slam on the brakes, I always think to myself, "he wasted $$ on a detector."

For radar, yeah, one might save you one here and there just from the stray beams, but laser, no way. With a beam 1' wide that does NOT bounce around like radar, and crosshairs on ONE vehicle, it is too late by the time it goes off.

But anyway, I'm not getting into this long, waste of time discussion again.

Yes, the V1 will detect instant on. It will detect laser also(this is very difficult to detect because of the beam like the cop said). There is a problem though. If the cop is hidden or hasn't used his radar on someone and then decides to use the radar or laser on you he will be able to get you. I thought that was common knowledge. A radar detector or laser detector doesn't prevent a radar/laser gun from working, it detects a laser/radar gun. To detect the gun must be used within the range of the detector. If these were blockers or jammers they would be named as such. They are detectors and that is all they do.

Ill have to agree with easterisland... and yes, I have picked up others being "shot" with laser, and was able to get out of trouble no problem...

Im glad you can laugh slapshot, you CAN get people with radar... those who are "NO" challenge... I would love you to come to Houston some time and just try and get some of the HALO group...

So yes, cops can and will exploit those who do not protect against it... Plus with the little box that Noel and I have been talking about, a cop would not be able to get us even if he did hit directly on us...:p
