Update on my engine/intake issues

OK, just some background info, since the board's been down:

New Years morning, I go out and crank her up. Start driving and immediately hear a dull tapping noise from the engine. I cut it off, post on the board, get some octane booster, don't know what it is. But, I keep hearing all the worst case scenarios, enough to hurt ($$$)

I take it over to JJ in Columbia for him to take a look. He finds the noise coming from the area of the top of the engine, on the passenger side. I'm already planning my brother to come help me check the valvetrain that weekend. Just for good measure, he vacuums brake fluid through the engine to clear up carbon deposits. After the smoke show, I go to leave, and immediately hear the noise was much louder and different. I take her back, and we go for a drive. Definately exhaust leak, and seems to be coming from the vicinity of the diverter valve, or it's tubing. I start to go back home, planning on tearing it all out that weekend. I hit 3500rpm and bam, the noise got very loud all of a sudden, and it's definately noticeable as an exhaust leak (can hear it half a mile away :)) Well, the cold weather came in, and I said screw it, take it back to him instead of me spending 4 hours in the 30F cold in a parking lot.

Well, he had the right area for the leak. The EGR tube for the upper intake had blown out. It looks like it started as a small crack, and then just slowly widened, and I must've blown the rest of it, as the aluminum is folded out now. So, looks like I need a new GT-40 upper.

I was just scared to Hell at this point, having complications closing on the house (still am), and just borrowed money to pay for my wife's tuition for next semester. I start planning the cheap way, freeze plugs or a phenolic spacer with EGR blocked. But, I wasn't really comfortable with that fix, and not sure when my next inspection is coming up. So, I spent hours every day going over ebay and forums, trying to find that 'killer deal'. But, most GT-40's were going for $275-300+, used, and I needed one quick.

I'd really like to thank everyone that helped me out. I really felt the sense of a community here. I especially want to thank Muddman, StruckBy, and LW93RCode (Good luck with the new one, Larry), you guys are awesome. I purchased StruckBy's old Downs Ford box upper, just because he already had it off the truck, it was cheaper, and a coworker lent me money so I could pay all at once. And a big thank you to JJ (JJSSVT) for all his help. If it was my regular mechanic, I'd be broke long before now from countless diagnosis fees. JJ helped me out extremely, and has won my future business.

I will be putting my old intake up on eBay, as soon as I receive the new one. Please, I can't give any deals on it, so don't bother asking :) The price I get for it is helping to pay the labor rates.

Glad to help and beleive me I know some of those feelings. I sent the package out today at about 10:00 am this morning with all hose and pieces labeled. Thanks for the help Brian and don't hesitate to call for help. I will e-mail you the UPS tracking number.

Thank you,Edward Huerta/Struckby

You dont know how tempting it is to just pull that 180k motor out and send it to my engine builder for some serious stuff :)........ in time.. in time..... I will talk to you later.. JJ

Actually, I started on a list :) Going to buy parts slowly, one at a time, for the eventual rebuild. Been pricing everything out and putting it down on paper. I was going to talk to you about that, too, one day :)

And thanks again StruckBy, the labeling is going to help out greatly. At least that's less time that JJ has to spend on my hunk of junk :)

Hunk of Junk!!!?? No way Brain. You have over 180K on the clock and you are still going with some small problems. Very cool I think.

That may be just what I need for the 70' to go with the 351 lower I bought if I ever get the money to inject the thing.

trying to break 100 posts tonight, need 4 more!

Woohoo! That baby had better be at my door tomorrow afternoon, I don't care how much snow they're forecasting. Too bad I won't have access to the digital camera until Tuesday ... and can't drop it off to JJ until Tuesday :) Gives me time to use the rest of the can of Gum-Out (thanks JJ, that stuff works awesome) to clean it up.

And you're right, this truck hasn't treated me too badly, for it's mileage. Power windows motor went out, thermostat gasket, exhaust rotted out had to be replaced, power steering pump replaced, and needed complete refresh of brake components, so not too bad. It was bought as a deferred vehicle, anyhow. Meaning, I bought it cheap knowing it had problems, but, foolishly, I figured that as the problems came up I could be able to afford and fix them, and by the end I should put as much money in to restore it as it would be to buy a better one... still trying to decide if that was a wise move.

I got nothing to do sunday, you want me to take out the old motor and put in the 01 crate motor that I am putting manley rods and new bearings in?? I am sure we can make it work somehow..

No thanks, I would actually like to keep a reliable motor in my truck *duck and run*:D

OK, I was freaking out when UPS didn't show up on Saturday, but they came through on Monday evening. Dropped it off, with the old one.

Now, it just gets worse. The studs are sheared off into the EGR spacer, due to so many miles/weartear. So, one new EGR spacer coming up. Down to the wall on my time limit, so had no choice but to get it through dealer ... another $200 plink in the hat ...

Mommas don't let your boys buy high-milers ....
