Hello all, I am about to have a few things done to my truck, one of them being changing the fluid and filter in my transmission. My question is should I go to Ford and get a replacement filter or will it be ok to just go to a local parts house?

Also, what type of fluid are you guys running out there? I was just going to use Dextron (SP) III. I'm not much on synthetic fluid in auto trans, too many places to leak out.

TRANNY FILTER

JUST GO TO THE PARTS HOUSE AND AND GET ONE....YOU'LL PROBABLY PAY LESS. AS FOR TRANNY FLUID I JUST USED THE REGULAR STUFF IN MINE, ...I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S REALLY WORTH THE DIFFERENCE IN PRICE AS FAR AS BENIFITS YOU RECIEVE OVER A GOOD QUALITY NON-SYNTHETIC FLUID.

These take Mercon or Dextron? Getting ready to change mine also. What would be a good synthetic to run? AMSOIL? Redline? This is my first auto so I'm kinda clueless, I also don't have the owners manual DOH

Our trucks use dextron. Both of those are good fluids. Like core-rider said it wil more than likely leak when you use synthetic.

If you drain the convertor you will need between 14-16 quarts. I also recommend getting a trans pan for a '99 Superduty 4x4, they hold a couple extra quarts and have a drain plug which makes changing fluid easier in the future and they use a reusable, leakproof rubber stealcore seal. You would need a 4x4 filter, too. On the "old site" someone had posted part numbers and prices, Hopefully they will post them again they weren't that expensive.

The E4OD takes Mercon.I am using Mobil 1 synthetic in mine and have not had any problems yet.Make sure you put a sealer on the torque converter drain bolt when you reinstall it.

TRANS PAN

IF YOUR INTERESTED IN FORDS LARGER PAN CALL MARK WITH LIGHTNING FORCE PERFORMANCE. I THINK HE SELLS THE PAN AND FILTER TOGETHER FOR 50 BUCKS.
