Tranny time w/ Level10

L8-APEX

Man on the edge
After an enjoyable 12K miles and almost one year it is time to overhaul the tranny. Yes I have a warranty but would you want another stock transmission, nah;) This new one should last at least 30K if I am lucky. My main failure is the intermediate clutches. There is a huge slide shift in the 1-2 shift. Those who have gone for a ride lately have felt it. It started fading shortly after 10K miles. Of course the dealer would never find it because when you pull the chip it goes back to the drop 3 injectors for 4 tenths of a second torque reduction 1-2 shift program and hides weak clutches. Then again the chip is what causes them to fail so they should not have to warranty it in the first place. Anyway I love finding the weak points in this truck and improving upon them. So I gladly put a few thousand in my 12K mile unit to make it what it should be. I wish I would have installed a Hydrosystem kit or valve body before it started slipping. Lesson learned. Man since January I have put over 6 grand in this heap in parts alone, trans, brakes, tires:eek: Glad I am not married I don't think she would understand my addiction:tu:

Huhhh?

:Y :Y :Y
Let me get this straight.
You honestly think "understand" is in a wives vocabulary?

hahahahahahahahaha :D

A wife would probably punish me by matching my expedatures with furniture, China, jewelery etc... Now Garret's sister on the other hand loves performance and thinks that V6 Stangs are an abomination of the breed. That might work:D Sorry Garret I couldn't resist the analogy.:tu:

Hey Terry,

Not bad for you to get that many miles out of your stock tranny. Thats the good thing about being single is that you dont have to expain all those expenditures.

Does that Level 10 kit have any parts from Home Depot :D :Y

Late night, no Home Depot parts here :) Hard parts looked good as did most clutches. As I expected the intermediates were black and toasty:eek: I will post pics tomorrow it is almost 3am and 530 comes quickly.:tu:

Holding Pattern

I found out that Ford made an update to the Transmission early 01 apparently. Thus I did not have the correct intermediate clutches to finish the rebuild:rolleyes: Two calls to Level 10 and the correct clutches are being shipped overnight. This sets me back for the meeting tomorrow:( What is more of a priority hot chicks or finishing the L? We will see... :tu: Here is a pic of my cajun style clutches. Note the hot spotting on the steels and the frictions are black not light brown. Due to some serious slippage. The new ones are single sided greenish custom builds by Level 10 only. Cool.

I'll try and cut back on useful stuff, don't want to violate the bylaws ;) Keep in mind I never hooked mine up with slicks or drag raced a lot and that is what really gets them to slippng. Reading the slipping away article in MMFF helped me make the decision to rebuild. One thing to remember is how a butt load of torque can cover up a problem in the trans.:tu:

Well another 330 morning and she is done. Took about 17qts to fill her back up:eek: That is about 100 bucks in Mobil1 ATF. I am driving easy tonight due to rain and letting everything soak and seat inside. I will probably put it on the road course tomorrow and see how it feels. To bed now:tu:

Well with 300 miles on the Metric 4R100 I am getting the hang of it. The results are impressive and I can't wait to dyno and 1/4 mile it to see! I better increase the escrow for tires as loss of traction is more frequent now. I cannot go full throttle in first or second without going up in smoke. I got a good third gear scratch at 90mph getting on the highway today:eek: I can't believe the power loss in the old transmission. I feel the difference! :tu:

No dyno yet but the seat of the pants feels better. For the track some stickies will help harness the converter potential. I didn't build it for HP or speed but to last a bit longer than 12K miles ;) It feels good and that is good enough :D
