Think I just saw the Mustang Mach-1 "in testing"

I called out of work today (he, he) and after I woke up around 12:30pm (he, he) I went up to a local Boston Market (in Coral Springs on University north of Royal Palm for the locals) to grab some lunch. As I was walking out with my grilled barbecue chicken dinner (mmmmm....) I saw a black 2001/2002 Mustang GT parked in the parking lot. I took a double take when I saw about a four inch piece of PVC pipe duct taped to a magnet and affixed to the roof on the passenger side with a wire running inside the door to a large pile of electronic equipment bolted to the dash. It had a CB antenna as well on the roof. As I hopped in the L, I looked over at it a little harder. It had the red "Bullitt" brake calipers, the American Racing torque-thrust wheels, the tires had pink grease pen writing on them (couldn't make out what the numbers meant), it was lowered 1" or so all around, it had a large screen laptop facing the driver and three or four other electronic boxes bolted to the dash. As I pulled out I looked at the back, just as I thought, Michigan dealer plate, and it also had a small metal tube attached to the underneath of the rear bumper just above and to the left of the right tail pipe and a white sticker on the bumper just above the tube that said something I couldn't quite make out. Oh yeah, I almost forgot it had the Mach-1 shaker hood, the hood itself looked sweet, it was primered dark grey, and the black scoop looked mean-as-hell sticking out of the hole in the hood. As I pulled out of the parking lot, two guys were eyeing me checking it out, obviously the "owners" of the car, I probably should have stopped and cornered them about what it was, but I was just to hungry.

Sound like a Mach-1? Sounds interesting....I would say humidity testing or something, but we are having very mild weather here in South Florida, in the 60s.

Sounds like it probably was the new Mach 1. I saw a 2001 black Lightning down here well before they were out. It had a hideous front end mask on it. I remember thinkin Who the hell would put those nasty rims and tail lights on a Lightning... Then a few months later Ford released pics of the 01 L.... I've since grown to kinda like the wheels and lights now.

I used to live off of University, on Westview in the North part of CS.

I never really heard of any testing done there, and the idiots shouldn't have left the car in a parking lot, let alone the laptop.

My guess is that they might be doing some tire testing, or emissions testing.

It must be nice to have a day off every now and then.;)

I saw a Cobra test Stang in Detroit in '97 when I went up there. Had an air/fuel gauge and a water temp gauge on the dash and a buttload of wires running from somewhere in the back of the car to a laptop. It also had a little trailer hitch like deal rigged up in the back. Detroit manufacturer's tags, etc. Must have been looking for that lost power (hehe).

Generally it does no good to talk to the guys driving the car as they're sworn to secrecy. Divulging anything that you can't readily see can mean their job. I work at the Rouge and trust me, I've tried many times, the latest of which the subject was an FR-200 Focus. If they talk, you can bet the media already knows about it.

Many moons ago, when I worked for a local auto-glass firm, I picked up a Ford Elite (1975) from Ford Research and Engineering Ctr. that had a huge bubble in it's hood, and beaucoup meters and equipment mounted inside. Opening the hood (couldn't stand the suspense) I was shocked to find a giant 460 with a high rise manifold. Couldn't wait to get behind the wheel, right? WRONG! As I started out, I realized this pig wouldn't go over 45. I had to keep it floored to keep people from killing me all the way to the shop. Nothing but a governed emissions-testing vehicle. Most disappointing ride I've ever took.

My uncle is a Sherrif in collier county (Naples) and said He sees em in cars with masking and a gillion computers and wires down there quite often, and there is double secret test track in the woods behind his house. He's not a BS'r so I tend to believe him.

A guy on Corral.net said that Team Mustang was down here this past weekend with 8 or so cars doing humidity and emissions testing. He said they were supposed to be at Moroso last Fri night - anyone go?
