You wanna race a what?!?!
For those who haven't heard yet, there was a terrible wreck that caused the FFW Orlando event to be postponed until the Commerce, GA race. Towards the end of 1st round eliminations in Pro 5.0, Steve Grebeck lost control of his car and swerved into the left lane. His car was struck by Bill Rimmer Jr.'s car and sent airborne over the left-hand guardrail where it rolled several times before coming to a rest. A large fireball erupted after the car came to rest but was extinguished shortly thereafter. Rimmer's car slid almost to the last turn-off on it's roof. He exited his car under his own power and was okay, refusing to go to the hospital. Steve was not as lucky. From where we were at near the finish line, we could see CPR being performed on him until the helicopter arrived for his transport. Some reports that I heard were that he was unconscious from the onset and was never resuscitated. We were told later that he had died from the injuries.
Of course, a lot of people are specualting and some are pointing fingers but I didn't post this to start any flames or even discussions. I only did it to inform those who might be interested and hadn't heard yet.
Maybe I also did it for two other reasons that we are all guilty of at times...
Don't miss a chance to tell the one's around you how much you love and appreciate them. I'm sure noone around Steve thought that this last pass he went on was anything different than thousands before it.
And don't take shortcuts on your safety equipment. Everyone go back over your stuff and check it. The minimum requirements are just that. Nobody says you have to run under 13 seconds before you can wear a helmet or 12 seconds and faster before you can put in a rollcage. Just because you 'eeked' through tech or the tech guy 'let you by' this time doesn't make it okay. Make it right! And then go give someone a hug that you've been meaning to for a long time!
God Speed Steve
