Strange Transmission Problem??

My truck just started doing something that has got me worried. When running it wide open in first gear, at 5500 rpm it feels like the transmission breaks. It stops pulling, then the motor revs a few times with no load, then it drops back into first gear. It kinda feels like a drum or something has a split in it, and before it shifts into second, it slips. The truck only has 6300 miles on it and the only mods are the ones listed in my sig. Could my Chip be the cause of the trans shifting problems? I want to just take the chip out and drive it, but that will mean putting the stock air box and Maf back on. Has anyone else had these problems? Do you think I should put everything back stock (except for the lower pulley) and bring it in to the dealer? I really dont want any trouble out of the dealer over a chip, but I hear you cant clear the trans codes once you have a chip. Also my O.D. light is not flashing yet. Thanks
Shane

I would Deff. put everything back to stock. Just from reading on this board, and from experiences with my Camaro I think they will hassle you to death. My GM dealer complained about my rotors and exahsut cutout for crying out loud!

Get that chip out of there for sure.

Not sure on the OD light flashing never knew they did that.

Good luck.

Man, this is starting to worry me, seems like every post I read about tranny problems had a chip installed. What gives?

My OD-light blinked and came on and was caused by a "speed sensor" on the transmission (I think?) and was replaced by the dealer under warranty. But serious tranny issues is another thing all together.

I am very scared that the transmission breakages that the chips are causing might void my warranty should I intall a chip. What is the word from the more knowledgeable board members on this subject - chips vs. tranny?

My 2001 transmission had to be replaced after 9000 miles. No chip, no track time. Just some normal fun driving.

I will admit that i am a little scared to install any chip but I dont think it is directly related to the chips. Mostly a transmission that is not built for close to 400 hp.

Well I took the chip out, put the stock MAF and airbox on, unhooked the battery and turned the headlights on. Went for a drive, now I figured out whats wrong with it. Anything over 1/2 throttle and it will not shift out of first gear. It will hit the rev limiter and then some. The only way it will shift into second, is to baby it after you take off, and it will shift fine. I guess its heading to the dealer in the morn, hopefully since the service manager has a drag Mustang and frequents the track, he will be a lil more understanding than most. :) lol BTW the truck has never had anything but the stock Goodyear F1s on the back and has only made about 8 passes total (since new) at the track. Wish me luck....:m

Sounds like either the intermediate plates are glazed or the shift solenoid (ss2) is fried. Chip could have toasted the solenoid if something was crossed, or shorted somehow. It could also be either the TSS or OSs (the sensors the other guy mentioned), that's an easy fix, about an $8 part and 10 minutes to install. If the OD light is plashing, it wrote a code to the PCM and the dealer will be able to tell exactly what went wrong.

As to handling the HP, if the motor is stock, the tranny can take it, if you do anything to the motor you need to do something to the tranny, too. A diesel is actually harder on the tranny than the L is, more torque which is all the tranny cares about, really.
Hope this helps,

G

Gregg, when you say "do something to the tranny" to handle the increased torque, what did you have in mind? Replacing the stock unit for an aftermarket (Level-10, Art-Carr, something like that)? Or can you modify the stock tranny to handle the abuse?

Well shes at the dealership now. The first thing the service manager asked me was "do you have a chip in it?" Of course I cant lie to the man, the contacts on the computer are nice and shiny. He said he will try and help me out this time since my dad knows him. He says that chips can cause damage to the transmission by raising the line pressure and like Greg said possibly frying a sensor or the shift solenoid. Hopefully its something simple, but since I have a 4 prom chip, Im gonna get it reburned with a stock setting for driving back and forth to work. Im also thinking about getting a new computer, since they are so easy to swap out, so whenever I bring it to the dealer they shouldnt say anything.....
