Stang headers

MO351

You're getting sleepy....
Hey I know some guys were going to try it but did anyone figure out if stang headers, such as Long Tubes, will work on the GEN 1's?

I looked into this about 2 years ago and found that there aren't any Mustang longtubes that'll work. And that included 351-swap headers, too. I ended up with custom headers. Probably the best thing going today is from JDM.....made by Kooks.

Later,

I have been wondering for a while if the 1 3/4" shorty headers that anderson motorsports makes for the mustang would work. I think bassani (spelling?) makes them for them. Any one ever though of this or have any idea if it would work? Thanks Craig

Well I have some information that may help out here. I am going to try this when I get my truck up and running again. I have a friend that I used to work with about two years ago that has a 1993 Gen 1. I spoke to him a few weeks ago to verify this information. He has a set of MAC 1 5/8" long tube headers for a 1993 MUSTANG GT on his truck. I have seen them personally. He still had the midship tank installed and here is what he did. For the driver side he had the collector area either bent or cut and a curve installed to point it towards the passenger side. For those of us not running a mid-ship tank this won't even be an issue. For the pass side he said it was a no problem drop in fit. Matched up to the cylinder head no problemo. I don't know what he use for exhaust from the headers back but I guess the rest can be configured to the owners liking/engine combo. I recommend and will definitely be using an "X". So this really makes me wonder. If the MAC 1 5/8" er's fit well what about the 1 7/8" from like Bassani or some other manufacturer? Or do they have to be MAC? Can it be 1 5/8" long tubes from some other manufacturer. We all know how much some of the Gen 1 specific long tubes can go for. Ever priced a custom set ?? Can you say "cha ching". Try like $1000 + by the time its all said and done. Granted they are totally awesome pieces of work. But my wallet just cant take that kind of hit. Heck you can get a ceramic coated set of used MACs for like $250-300 I think. Well maybe this will give some of us an alternative for better performance. Our fellow friend Hotrod is running some 1 1/2" Headmans with some pretty darn good results. Cant say I really know of any other Gen 1 running 13.2 naturally aspirated. Must be in the tune and the exhaust. So thats the info. Lets see what happens.

I just looked at Mac's web-site and it seems like they're a few variables you have to be considered. Are they for a 302,...automatic type or 5-speed,.......or are they the ones that are for 351 swap?!

Looks like they have a lot of different part #'s for the long tubes!

I would be most interested in a set of 1-3/4"s, but I would settle for 1-5/8" if that's all I can get to work!

I have a set of Macs in the garage and they do look pretty close laid down next to the stock exhaust. If I get a chance this weekend I'll measure them up against my truck.

Well I will e-mail my friend and see if he remembers if his MAC headers were for a automatic or 5 speed Mustang. If 95Lightning2 can tell us if they will fit up in there then we may have another definite answer. So I will e-mail him now and hopefully have a reponse bythis evening.

I guess I'll have to get off my lazy butt and remember to do some measuring tonight. But...... now that I think about problems I have seen with mustang LT and AOD clearances around the bellhousing it would be hard to believe mine (manual trans style) would fit past the E4OD bellhousing.

I have some hooker LTs on the truck now so it shouldn't be a problem measuring it out.:D

I bet they would atleast have to be for the automatic. The manual trans. headers are closer to the motor so they probably will not go around the trans in our trucks. There is also the 94-95 mustang headers that are even a little more different.

Well, 5 speed headers won't and it's two fold. First, it will hit the bellhousing but could be fixed by maybe buying and automatic version. Second, the headers are for a 302 stang and are 2 inches short hanging down. They'll fit but point right at the shift linkage on the side of the trans. You have to put a major bend in the tubing after the header. I would think a header for a 351 stang w/ automatic would work fine. Sorry for the delay.

BTW, the passenger side doesn't appear to be a problem.:)

OK looks like we are getting some conflicting information here. My friend e-mailed me back and told me that the headers are from a 5 speed Mustang. Well that conflicts with the above post. Now he still has the mid-ship tank and does have a bend on the driver side header. So maybe thats why he does not have a problem with the shift linkage. So Since I do not have the mid-ship tank and do not intend to put the 90* bend on the driver side header it looks like it may not work for me. So now the question is............What about the MAC long tubes for 351 conversion in a Mustang?? Will that work? Well anymore input would be greatly appreciated. LOng tube header users post what you are using so we can see whats being used out there.

Knowing how header can vary alittle even from the same manufact. I would say the bellhousing thing is just to close to call. The measuring is never as good as putting the piece on but on mine it look like you would have to dipple one of the tubes. The big issue is the linkage, it wouldn't require a 90 bend but it would need something. Wish I had a set of 351 stang headers to try, I would think they would work.

I have a set of MAC 351w Mustang headers with 1 7/8 or 3/4 tubes for sale ($200 + s&h) if anyone wants to try and put them on a Lightning. I have heard of guys using Mustang headers on a Lighting before. If anyone know who Kurt Walker is he had Mustang headers on his Lightning.I was going to put these headers on my Lightning but I'm going to go with a 2 in. of bigger header. with 4 in. exhaust.
