Stand alone engine management.

Hey all,

I'm looking to get a stand alone. I just want to go over the options and what's best for me.

I have no experience tuning. But I want to learn how to do it.

My truck is a manual so I don't need anything for the transmission control.

Just the engine.

For now it'll be on my current N/A 351W. In the future though....I'll probably rebuild or get a new engine(351W based) and throw a centri-blower on it.

I've seen the Stinger Pimp-X.

I've heard of the Holley Terminator X.

I don't know anything though.

I'd also like to learn something that can cross over into maybe doing a stand alone for my 04 Mach 1 in the future.

This is why I was leaning towards the Holley system. Figure learning that system would help in doing other tuning in my other toys.

What you all think?

Once you learn the basics of one system, be it Megasquirt, Holley, FAST, AEM, whatever, it pretty much translates to any of them.

Having used BS3, FAST, AEM and now the PiMP Megasquirt, I'd recommend the PiMP because it's plug and play with the manual conversion. You can install it, fiddle with it to your heart's content, and if it's not where you want to be, take it out and reinstall the stock computer in a matter of minutes. Plus, there's a growing knowledge base here to help.

Good enough for me!! Thank you for the reply!

Jeff listed excellent points.

I would also add something not to be overlooked and that is his last point. Several folks on this board run the PiMP setup, so you have Lightning specific, PiMP specific knowledge to rely on.

Yup! I've been reading up on that thread! It's great! Just wanted to check all options before pulling the trigger!

Last I checked Holley did not join NLOC to offer product specific help. Stinger did, to me that speaks volumes about their support. Just my .02

ha! True

I have no idea how much help Holley offers it’s customers on tuning and set up so I can’t speak to that.

But I do know that Stinger is very responsive and works with you ongoing. I was in your shoes not long ago. I decided to go with PiMPxshift because of the transmission options (not applicable to you) and because of how many people on here are using it.

Once you buy the system you join the Stinger forum and can ask stupid questions and Stinger patiently works with you to get you up and running and answer your concerns.
I just recently got mine running and I’m still working on the tune.

Actually you can sign up for the forum without purchase and read the threads of others that are currently receiving help on all levels of tuning and set up. See for yourself.

I’m pleased with it so far but I really have a ways to go. I will be wiring all of my extra systems into it. Fan, electric water pump, trans cooling fan, nitrous, staging, etc.

It’ll be nice to control everything from one management system instead of having multiple controllers to worry with.

From one rookie to another you are going to need help unless you have someone local to help and guide you. It’s nice getting help from the people who created and know the system! And the guys on this forum have been very helpful as well.

I’m not knocking any other systems just giving you my recent experience with this one.

Im currently playing with the tune on a friends foxbody with the terminatorX. It was tuned at a local shop and has some major quirks. I like the graphs and the software is fairly straight forward to navigate but I feel like it has too much control in the background with features that you can't adjust on your own. With that being said the megasquirt (or aem like I have on my car) may be a bit overwhelming at times as everything can be played with. The more i play with the holley the less id recommend it over the pimpxs. It has plenty of nice features but its not for me. Id say you can't go wrong with the pimpxs and the support those guys do on their forum. Im sure there is enough guys on here and there to get you going and leave you plenty to grow into if you ever decided to do more mods.

I think that’s why a lot of guys like the Holley system. I look at the Holley as a more Plug And Play for Hot Rodders. The PiMPxs feels like it was designed for track vehicles.
