Rebuild Advice - Stroker Talk II

Alright guys,

Thanks to all the advice on the Stroker Talk thread, I have decided upon a 392/393/396 for my 95 L.

Next issue, who and what?

I have decided to buy a preassembled shortblock. By the time I have the parts priced out, I am very close to the cost of an assembled shortblock. Well, at least the advertised prices. That brings me to my first question.

What do I need upgraded? Or, what are the weak points of the stock 351W? Is it the crank? The rods? Will stock rods hold up reliably to a 393 with about 12 lbs of boost?

Most companies offer and economy stroker (Scat crank and stock rods) and an upgraded kit that uses a steel crank and H or I beam rods. I will run this thing on the street nearly every day (70 miles a day).

I currently have an S-Trim but may upgrade to a turbo or two at the time of rebuild.

Next thing, who? A couple guys around here have recommended Keith Craft?

Any other building specs or tips you can think of for me to ask the builder about would be greatly appreciated..... Thanks

The weak point of the stock combination is definitely the rods. Focus any upgrade money there.

Just my opinion, of course. :)

Your stroker will have to be low compresion to work with you blower. With the mods you have You mite only get an extra 50 horses from a 393.If fuel consumption isn't a factor I would go bigger. The advertised hp from a393 doesn't impress me. I don't know your driving habits or how heavy your foot is.I guess for the price the 427 could be just as dependable and give you more HP.There is now substitute for cubic inches. Later Alex

They always said that there is NO Substitute for Cubic Inches but my Engine Builder ( B&B Performance Machine ) says that my 383 Race Stroker will make more H.P. than a 408 Stroker. He also says the main thing is what BLOCK are you using & what RPM's will you be running.. My Race motor makes power up to 7,200 RPM's. I think if I was going to Run a Streetable Stroker Motor I would have a 393 Stroker Also..:D

Great info!

Jeff,
I think I can remember why you think the rods are the weak point ;) I agree.

Red,
I also plan a custom camshaft from Cam Motion for the rebuild to replace the Lunati 51014 I have now. That, with some legit dyno time, I certainly hope to pick up a little more than 50hp. The other factor here is cost. I have not examined very, very closely yet, but the use of off the shelf parts for the 393 makes things relatively affordable. The only other way I may go is a 408. And, yeah, my foot is pretty heavy.:D

Ralph,
I don't think I'll ever see those RPMs, or will I? At what speed will a street tuned, blown 393W turn? 6000-6500?

Do y'all think the steel crank is worth the money/piece of mind for the RPMs I will be seeing?

Thanks........

Kev

Because of the 3" main journals in our trucks, they're pretty much limited to about 6200 rpms. Beyond that, the oiling and bearing surface speed starts to increase the risk of spinning a bearing.
