Raced a Cobra last night....

Derek@DRI

Hello , Supporting Vendor
Last night while i was heading home i noticed a C5 Vette up ahead so i sped up to see if he would race..but nothing, but then up ahead my friend notices a Newer Silver Cobra and says go race that i bet you he'll hand you your ***..i was like ok and i get behind him and right away i guess he noticed i was an L from the fog lights because he took off so i followed him and finally we catch a light. I get next to him and look over and he smiles and gives me a nod so i give him a nod back and wait for the light..it turns green and we both take off i get like half a car legth ahead right at the start..we both basically had bad starts as we both roasted the tires anyways i was ahead for that half car length and then i see him with the corner of my eye he is dead even with me and then just starts to pull away in 3 gear? i'm guessing and gets about a car length and a half ahead,we shut down after that because some moron went across the road so i had to slow down and then that was it....anyways i followed him and told him he had a nice car and that it was really fast...i asked what he had he said intake and exhaust(thats all i know because i was talking to him through my window) and he asked me what i had and i told him i'm stock and he said that my truck was really fast. Well anyways bottom line is he had me...probably would of pulled away real hard if we wouldn't of shut down...now what i want to know is since it's the first time i've ever raced a Cobra is...With what he had was that normal that he was pulling away like that? and how much does an "intake and exhaust" add? Because i told my friend i think if he was stock i could of had him(reading from past posts),he says noway...anyways my other friend who was behind us in his car(Mustang-V6 so just watched, other car 5.0 but just happened not to have it!!) and he thought i should of taken him if he was stock but that if he has intake and exhaust it'll add alot more ponies becuase he probably had the whole manifold...i really don't know about Mustangs??.Anyways it was a nice *** race except for the result..lol it happens.

Despite a lot of stories to the contrary, Cobras and LS1 F-bodies are more than a stock Lightning's equal, especially if you don't get him bad out of the hole. They turn higher trap speeds than the trucks which means that out on the road they'll pull away.

I dont know about all exhaust, but I remember reading the FR500 exhaust install on a new Cobra and it gained a whole lotta ponies. No idea how much an intake is worth.

Intake and exhaust?? There isn't an aftermarket intake for the 4v Cobra. So his "intake" is probably like what ricers call an intake which would be a cold air induction kit with the K&N. The exhaust can really help out on the Cobra, though. Like Jeff said, the Cobra can take a stock GEN2 if the driver can drive. 320 hp and about 1000 or so pounds lighter. Looks like you gave him a good run though.:tu:

Ah MO351 Bassani makes headers and a whole exhaust system for the new Cobras. Im not sure on the Intake though. Just thought I'd add.:tu:

Yes I know that there are quite a few exhaust upgrades for the DOHC Cobra. What there is not available are upper and lower INTAKES. Bassani has got great stuff. One of these days I'll get a Xpipe on the L.

Thanks for the input...but roughly what does an exhaust do for them as in h.p. numbers?? Because after reading around i think a stock Gen2 L should be able to take a Cobra, but of course you are right about the trap speeds,it's just that it seemed that his "intake and exhaust" helped him alot...well hopefully i'll get my payback one day..lol

I dunno if a stock L can take my Cobra, I'd be more than willing to try one :) Cobra's run better than a lot of people think, you just have to drive them right (read RPM!!).

It depends on what all he has done as far as the exhaust goes, a set of long tubes, off road pipe and cat back can help a lot. Yeah the guy probably meant a cold air kit, but there are some people selling ported 4V intakes.

Oh and beware of people who have done the above mentioned mods and 4.30 gears :D

True! Also, they loved to rev up, unlike the SOHC. I would take my 97 up to near redline before shifting.

Black Bolt,
I have a modded 99 Cobra so I'll break it down a bit more. There isnt an aftermarket intake for the 4V Cobra. You can port it a bit but I'll bet this guy just has a cold air induction kit. The exhaust on these cars was really bad on the 99s, this was addressed by the power fix that they got. On the 01s, they came with a better stock exhaust but it still has room for improvement. Bassani makes awesome X pipes w/w out cats for them. This is about a 12-15 rwhp gain alone. I put some Dynomax Bullet mufflers on mine instead of going with Fords fix exhaust and these were a very noticeable gain as well. Prolly 8-10rwhp over stock mufflers. I just had the FRPP shory headers put on as well and I picked up almost 2 more mph at our 1000' track just with this. So all told there is about 25-30rwhp to be gained in a total Cobra exhaust. I also have the 4.10 gears and a JMS chip. These two alone helped me gain .6 secs and 5 mph at my track. These cars must have gears. But the biggest thing is that a Lightning weighs 1000 or more pounds easily over a Cobra. Stock to stock could be anyones race with good drivers but the longer you go, the aerodynamics play into it too and this is a big Cobra advantage. If your truck had a chip, pulley, and filter kit, you would have taken that Cobra Im pretty sure. Your truck sounds like it runs very well, remember its stock. If I had a Lightning, I would race Cobras from a 30 roll to about 80. I think you would have a nice advantage there. Now mod that truck and find that guy!! Later!

Last I heard, the FR500 intake wasnt available yet. There are some out there being tested but thats it. The FR500 heads are available in bare castings right now but Ford hasnt released the the valvetrain or the cams for it yet. However, you can get aftermarket cams now for the 4V. Later!

Thanks for all the info..because i was curious to know roughly what his mods did, another thing though that i didn't mention i was racing with OD on if i would of had it off i wonder if it would of made a difference?? Anyways i'll probably be able to race him again since my friend saw him at Towers(car hang ot place in S.Fla)and hopefully get him out the hole and see?? Well i have to admit that was a nice *** looking Cobra, faster than i expected thats for sure. Any of y'all raced one lately?

Ohh by the way any of you S.Fla guys going to Towers this weekend shoot me an e-mail thanks.

what about a small n2o kit?

Could it be that he had one of those small nitro kits plumbed into his intake tube. They are really stealth, and this could be considered to be an aftermarket intake. Hey, it gets more "air" in there doesn't it.

I seriously doubt the car had nitrous, he probably just a cold air tube and exhaust like he said. It's the new think to call a cold air tube an "intake".

But if I recall correctly, there is also a short runner intake available for the Cobras. I forgot who makes it though.

Well what do you know couple months later..I catch him at Moroso(track) and well i'm so pissed...I saw him and was telling my friend about how I had raced him on the streets and he beat me and how i want to race him again because I thought i could do better.... so go out and try and get some hot laps first, well when i finally going to ask him to line it up he had shut down his car and parked it, i was so pissed as revenge would of been sweet. ;c This is also when i got my best time of 13.6 to his best of 13.9...I'm still wondering though how much of a difference it was on the street...probably just know how to drive my L now;)
Well hopefully i'll meet him again.

go to panozauto.com this co. uses fords 4.6 L engine i dont think the intake is stock ,,,, but I could be wrong:confused: they also use a 6.0 @ 600 hp now what a 6.0 is I dont know ,,,but I would love to have it in my 93"L";d ;d ;d

Hey Charlie, FYI a 6.0 would be in the neighborhood of a 365ci. A 5.9 is a 360ci and a 6.6 is a 400ci. Give or take a cube..:tu:

I dont care about the cubes its 600 hp ;d I just want someone to give me one:rolleyes: and hope it bolts up.... and if it dont ... I got a welder for fathers day ..... I'll make it fit:tug: 600 hp with no s/c yep I would make it fit in the 93 or the 99 "L";d ;d ;d
