Project Ext Lightning...suggestions?

Hey Gang,

Im new to this forum and am here to pick your brains. I have a friend that owns a 93 Lightning and we have been hashing out how to convert my 93 F150 Ext Cab to a Lightning powered truck. He suggested that I join this great forum and start asking some questions. So here I am. I hope you guys dont mind me asking alot of questions..Im new to the scene, but I am willing to learn :-)

I know there are structeral differences between the Lightning frame and a standard F150 frame. Please bear in mind, Im not going to be going to the tracks every weekend, but I do want to have the sleeper truck that the unsuspecting Chevy owner might think they are going to dust. Is there anything that I should be concerned about? Is there any structeral enhancements that can be done to my frame?

First off..has anyone known of a home conversion such as I plan to do? If so..what are the high points? Im planning on sinking about 5 grand into a motor. I currently have a 5.0 with 170k on it, but I am thinking about getting the rebuilt Lightning from Ford for about 1800.00 or getting the engine listed at the following URL:

http://www.ford-power.com/365-351W.htm

Which would be better? Would the engine at the link work with what I am wanting to do?

I am also wanting to put a Mass Air Kit on it. I know Ford has one for about $1000. Thats pretty steep for right now. Is there a cheaper way of getting Mass Air, or should I stick with Speed Density and get an EEC Tuner?

I have an EO4D tranny in my truck now. I am planning to get it rebuilt soon after I get the motor in. Were there any differences between the stock EO4D and the Lightning version? If so, can these changes be implemented during a rebuild?

Well, I guess this is it for now. Again, I hope you guys dont mind a newbie in the ranks. Im getting pretty excited about this project (truck gets paid off next month) and I will start saving the cash to start the project in July or so.

If any of you have any ideas, suggestions, links or whatnots, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Drugar

First of all welcome abord man. Enjoy all the info, and feedback you will recive. Second I would love to have an excab L but the money you would spend would be more than you could find one . The only problem would be to find one. Check your PM.

Theres a guy on hear who has a bad a$$ looking ext cab L. He came to or last meeting here in cali. The truck was Ford blue and had lots of decals.Looked Way Cool. He'll probably post as soon as he reds this.Welcome to the club. Later Alex

I'd recommend getting a totalled L from a salvage yard, complete with front and rear suspension, interior, engine & trans (optional). The rear susp. has a reinforce axle housing w/ 4.10 limited slip rear & slapper leafs, F&R sway bars, factory lowered 1" front/2" rear, different crossmember than a stock F-150. The interior has Lightning bucket seats & center counsel. Under the hood there is a GT40 packaged 351w w/ shorty headers and true daul exhaust w/ 4 cats. There are more diffs, but I'm tired of typing. Hope this gives you some ideas. Sounds like your planning a fun project.

There always tons of lightning parts for sale on ebay. Just glancing through before and saw lightning seats, exhaust, tube bumper, lightning engines and trans, chips and a bunch more.

There is a bunch more but didnt want to take up much space. There is a gauge pod, grille,

Thanks for the input so far. I have thought about checking salvage yards across the state to see if anyone has a totalled L for sale. I'll look into it and see what I can find.

Also, thanks for the Ebay motors site. I never knew it existed. I'll keep my eyes on it regularly to see what pops up.

Again, thanks for the welcome and input. Its much appreciated.
