I did not drain my converter when I did mine, but from what I understand, All you do is take away all the lower hard wear tell you can see the torque converter. Spin it tell you see the dain plug and drain it from there. When you put the torque converters drain plug back in, you are going to want to dress it with some sort of sealer. It took me 8 quarts to fill the stock pan and not the converter. I was told that takes another 8 quarts or so.
The deep pan allows you to run an additional two quarts of fluid. If you buy this pan from FORD or from one of the tuners on the board that is for the 4x4 F150 with the same tranny, it also includes a drain plug. If you run this pan, you also have to get the 4x4 filter. All that is not overkill and adds a little more insurance to yours truck tranny. Hope that helps.
