Opened Differential.....Oh crap!!!!

Has Seller's regret
Well......I finally got the chance to open the rear end. Remember I have had the bouncing speedo probs.
There was alot of shavings attached to the magnetic sensor, but none really in the fluid when I drained it.

There was one gear, not sure of the proper name, that had one tooth really trashed. It is the larger gear " running" vertical with wide gears located just "inside" the clutches. One tooth was half gone!

Hope that makes sense!;)
So I filled her back up and drove home.

How much will a new set cost me? Is it smarter to just put in an Eaton or something else other than stock??

I can't afford to do anything right now.I will just have to wait it out.

Man that sucks!:m The gear you are talking about wouldn't happen to be the largest one in the rear is it? If so that is your ring gear. If that has a broken tooth then you should plan a rebiuld very soon. You will need a new ring & pinion gear set(4:10 for our Ls). New bearings and either a rebuild kit for the stock diff. or an Eaton Posi diff. Who has the best prices I don't know but I know you can call summit and steeda. Good luck man!!:w

I'm almost positive he's talking about the side gears, or the spider gears... Take my advice, get an Eaton.. The stock Traction-Lok is mediacor in my opinion. I've rebuilt mine at the beginning of the fall and after about 2000 miles my bouncing speedo came back...Next time it won't, I'm going with an Eaton..

Also those that have switched to an Eaton or any other diff, there's really nothing to it, currect?? It's not like setting up a new set of gears?? You just put a dial indicator on the ring gear and set the amount of play there is between the pinion and diff gear??

It is pretty much dead center of the diff. and has wide swooping teeth. Probably the spider gears. I wish I had a pic to compare it to.

Reider racing, $290 Eaton. everything falls out and in rather easy, I thought. pull axles, remove bearing caps, diff falls out. buy new bearings from NAPA, and have them pressed on the eaton. put ring gear and exciter gear in oven for 5 min, drop onto eaton, let cool. line up bearing caps, races and spacers, lide in, install caps. replace everything else and enjoy.

Lets try to identify your broken gear.
Side gears - axle slides into splines, c-clip holds axle in
Spider gears - smallest gears in diff., center pin holds them in
Ring gear - largest gear in rear
Pinion gear - deepest in case, drive shaft connects to it, turns ring gear
Exciter ring - runs parallel w/ ring gear, only thinner w/ lots of short teeth

Hope this helps

I was trying to attach a pic I found on Ford Racing. I will try again.

Hmmm Looks to Me like that one still has all It's teeth on it still. Chewed up a bit.... Make sure You get the right gears if You replace them.. they aren't too expensive but Curt got the wrong spec. gear the first time... it was almost but not quite identicle and Would Not Fit! :(

That is the one! Mine just has one tooth meesed up though. It seems to be cut in half. All of the others look fine. Very odd, huh.

Well, I guess I will have to start saving some $$$$. This sucks, all the money I spent on headers, xpipe and ranchos and I can't go to the track!

if you want to be cheap just buy a new spyder gear. I would also get a girdle if your going to keep the stock t-lock. Then you could save up for a eaton, slap that in and forget about it.

lightninggreg,

I have FMS mass air, powerdyne, MSD 6BTM.......and a bunch more!

I just got some Hooker headers, X pipe and Ranchos on it. No track times with those though,
