One wheel peelin!

So at today's ALOC meet, i was being a bit naughty and kinda smoked the tires a little, and layed down a nice patch of rubber from one tire. I guess this means its time to rebuild the rear end.

What do you think I'm in for?

Blog,

The stock trac loc's have always been very weak. I think that you could rebuild it with new springs and clutches, but most people upgrade to an Eaton or Auburn. If the gears are good, you just have to remove the posi unit, remove the ring gear and reinstall. You do need to set the gear backlash with the proper shims. You should also get new carrier bearings as well. I think an Auburn pro runs about $325 and bearings are about $40. Should be around $400 total if you do the work yourself.

With all that extra power your making sounds like it's time for a Eaton :D

Same here. I can get two wheel burnouts when I power-brake it, but on a hit and go run I just get the one black stripe on the road. Should I consider a new rear end??

I thought I had heard a while back about a way to shim up stock trac-loc. It was either a spring replacement or rearranging the clutches with an extra plate. Does anybody have any info on this?

Yeah, you reuse 2 of your old friction plates. You then monkey around with the steels until you can get 4 frictions instead of 3 in per side. I did this, and my posi works great, but I think I already sheered off a clutch ear, and have to go back in. Do yourself a favor, save the 100 bucks and just buy a damn Eaton, it's alot simpler.

Oh and buy the Eaton at Reiderracing.com It's only $345 from there. Shy away from Auburns as well, they're a one shot deal, if you break them, you can't rebuild them.. No so with the Eaton

I would check around, but I think reider racing has the best pricing on the Eaton unit at $345. check out http://www.motivegear.com as well. You might have to call them for a distributor, but I know they have good pricing and also sell the Eaton unit.

I just put one in my truck like two weeks ago and it was fairly easy. Like somone said, replace the carrier bearings and get a shim kit for it as well. Your local NAPA should be able to get you the bearings and press them on the new carrier for you. I can get you part #s if you need them. My truck actually went back together with the stock shims from the trac loc and the backlash was at .010 with those. I believe the spec is from .008 to .015 if I'm not mistaken. Just have to measure that with a dial indicator if you have one. The torque specs on the ring gear and bearing caps are both 80 ft/lbs as well.

Other than that, its pretty much just a case of taking the cover off, sliding the axles out, pulling the bearing caps off, sliding the old diff out, switching over the ring gear and excitor ring, putting the new diff in there, putting the bearing caps back on and checking the backlash, putting the axles back in, then putting the cover back on and filling it back up. It took me a few hours at most. Also, make sure you clean out the pumpkin very good when you take the old diff out. Any metal pieces in there might get in your new bearings and burn them up.

Keep in mind guys that with these posis heat is the enemy of all clutches. The instant you get one wheel spin for god's sake get out of the gas. It only takes one time to destroy a stock set of clutches. If you aint going sideways, lift off th gas....besides it's no fun if you are not sideways anyhow.
