Hey, I'm about to get under my truck and change the oil pan gasget. So, I was wondering should I might as well change the oil pump. If so, should get a high flow. What do you think?
How many miles are on the engine? If more than than 60K I would change the pump while I was there. In most cases a high flow is better suited for average use rather than a high pressure. What the majority of people need is the high flow so as our engines gain bearing clearance do to normal wear we maintain normal oil pressure. A high pressure pump is better suited for extreme racing conditions where the normal oil pressures can't keep the oil film between the metal parts due to abnormal loads. Let me emphasize "extreme". A reasonably modified L you intend to drive for awhile wants volume. Good Luck, Greg
You will notice an increase in oil pressure also with the high volume.. With 6 quarts in the system and our low RPM limit I don't think you'll have too much of a problem with the high volume.. Mustangs sometimes do have a problem with them sucking the pan dry at high RPM though..
With a HV pump in my 5 liter I was seeing 50-55psi idle(hot) and 80psi cold(2000RPM), and about the same 80psi cold idle..
