O/T -New Car? Maybe? Confused!

Well after reading all the posts about blown engines, rods being thrown, and spark plugs being ejected from these engines it has me quite scared about where I stand on how much further I can go without hurting something. I talked with my friend tonight at his birthday party, along with the guys from the magazine "Import Tuner" ( not sure if the magazine is sold outside of california) They rolled up in their ricers and let me tell you these werent your ordinary run of the mill honda's. They were nissan Skylines one Black R32 and one White R33. I was stunned by the looks of both the cars. I had to ask him to lift his hood. The guy with the White R33 Skyline gladly smiled and lifted his hood. Laying under the hood was B26 Twin Turbo motor decked out by XS Engineering and mostly APEX-i (later i found out the guy with the White NIssan was V.P of APEX) From the looks of the engine it looked like it had thousands invested I asked him if he had run it at any track yet, he said "no not yet" he was waiting for the import showdown here in Cali to show off. He was dyno'd on the Dyno at XS at an amazing 1,000 hp so he said  , by the look of the money he had in clothes and in his ride he cant be too far off. Well to make a long story short, I might be selling the L soon for one of these bad boys. They looked too good to be true and for the price I can get them for its practically a steal for a Japanese supercar! Dont get me wrong I love this truck to death, but im very worried about how things will hold up in the long run. Am i jumping the gun? or maybe avoiding a very expensive bullet? Would anyone be willing to buy a 2001 Lighning with only 7,000 on it?

Last year a kid showed up at the track with a skyline. It must have been stock because he was only running high13s in the quarter. Not very impressive.Maybe he didnt know how to shift too well but if you lay down that much money for an import you better know how to drive it.

Sam,

SVT has a great warranties................. if you blow a plug wthat the hell it will get replaced........

Trade the L for a ricer? Puke !

A Skyline is not a "ricer." It is one of the baddest production Japanese cars of all time (probably the baddest Japanese vehicle that was never sold in the U.S.). Twin-turbo inline-6 cyl, AWD ... mod for mod, it would probably thump a Lightning in any contest of speed.

If all you need is one of these to be called a "ricer," I will take two, please. :D

Sam, So why not build the bottom end of the L? I am sure Mr. 1000 HP is not running a stock bottom end...or won't be for long!

While the Skyline does not deserve to be called a ricer, please do not go over to...the dark side! ;)

Just my $0.02.

My sensitive spot....

Ok, You guys are all over my sensitive spot here. Soooo.... to avoid getting banned for my personal and patriotic beliefs, I only have a couple of things to say.

1. The Zero was the baddest plane in the sky at the beginning of WWII. What did American technology do to it IN THE LONG RUN?

2. No matter what label you put on it, remember one thing... "Brought to you by the same wonderful people that brought you Pearl Harbor - the real terror, NOT the movie...."

Yeah It "MIGHT" be able to take a modded L if you take the speed limiter off of it first. I am not slaming the skyline because a good friend of mine has one, but lets look at cost vs reality. Not to many people have 50K to have a skyline sent over.

So you have nothing in your house made in Japan because of what they did at Pearl Harbor (50+ years ago) and WWII (again 50+ years ago)?

And don't even try saying I'm not patriotic ...

Edit: I just noticed that you're from Tennessee. The three rice-burner Japanese cars that I have owned were put together in Tennessee. Maybe you know some people who have earned paychecks and made a living working at the same plant that assembed those cars. I'm sure you have (you know, that whole six degrees of seperation thing), so tell them "Thanks!"

Cost and maintaining a Skyline wasn't what I was getting at -- I have a hard enough time getting the right parts for a Nissan Sentra built in Tennesse, so I would hate to see what it's like going to a Nissan dealership searching for Skyline parts. My point was that a Skyline -- just because it's Japanese -- isn't anywhere close to being like the bling-bling 4-door "ricer" Accord Johnny Yo-Boy has so he can drive back and forth from his crib to McDonalds.

WHAT?!?!?!

You've got to be kidding me!? Do you drive your truck daily? Or just on weekends? You're running the biggest pulley out there for our trucks (last I heard?) and a host of other mods and you're worrying about engine problems/breakage?! Duh, hello??? If you're going to boost the output of the engine that far past what Ford designed the motor for, then you're going to have to deal with the consequences.

Do you honestly think that you're not going to have problems with ANY other car (American or Japanese or whatever) when your're running upwards of 16lbs of boost through it?! I mean come on man, get real here. If you like the Skyline's looks and performance, then that's cool, but don't dog on the Lightnings for reliability problems.

A good point was made in this thread about replacement parts, they will be hard to come by.

I digress, I don't know how much money you have to dump into a vehicle. If you can afford $50K just to get into a stock Skyline, then maybe you're not to worried about finding parts and it being reliable for daily use. Keep in mind all the $$$ that guy had in his car also...

Sorry, I'm just defensive about my truck and Ford, I love my truck and am a loyal Ford customer. But I'm not that naive to ***** about parts breaking if I was running 16lbs of boost through it and power-breaking it every weekend at the track.

Just my opinion...and by the way, my truck is stock because my new-car warranty is much to valuable to me on my income.

Just for the record, I have made no such accusation....

BINGO !!!! Not if I can find anything similiar made in the USA (at any price).

Regardless of where they are assembled, the $$$ still goes to "the land of the rising sun"....

For me, time is immaterial. I don't agree with the "six degress of separation" theory, either. I DO believe that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Perhaps a Vietnamese 4 banger? Still too far away? How about an "Osama-mobile"? All the same to me. Very near the same body count (so far).

I recognize that not everyone agrees with me, and I try to keep my personal beliefs out of the news, so I will not post further on this issue.

Good evening.

Sam and others, don't get me wrong, I wouldn't trade my L for anything (in it's price range) right now....but these so called "ricers" aren't bad.....so called meaning, sure, I hate those annoying $hits (meaning stocks hondas with fart pipes, and wing gallore, and more stickers that you can count), that buzz around us during our everday lives but ****, give me a Supra TT, or even just a plain old Supra and I'll be damn happy.... Don't like the Skylines much, but I have a buddy who is running some good numbers on a lightly moddeed Supra TT..... I'll say this, he'll wipe my *** for sure.... And let's not foget how easily it is to get those things up to 800 rwhp!! and safely at that... Flame me if you want, but come across the wrong "ricer" one day, and it'll be him waving to you from HIS rear view mirror. (p.s. just coming from small experience with some of the good guys from the import crowd who DON'T believe in wings, UNLESS YOU NEED THEM!)

We had better close all our bases in Japan since those soldiers, airmen, sailors and Marines stationed there are no doubt supporting the local economies whenever they go off base! Those wiley Japanese are just using us on all fronts to build up their infrastructure so they can attack us again!

Actually, after we desimated the Japanese with our bombs, we more than rebuilt their infrastructure. That is why they are known for high quality standards (ever heard of Dr. Juran?).
