O-ring/ Non- O Ring

I am ready to order some trick flow twisted wedge heads. I am wondering if i need o ringed grooved heads? I am looking at a set on ebay for $959.95 that are non o ring heads and they say they are for a 5.0 but i am assuming these fit my 5.8 And i also have a guy that is going to do some porting work in town for me is it possible that i could have him make them o ring because i have heard that they can machine a groove in them. The reason i am wondering if they will work is because im going to be running around 15# of boost and i do not want to kick a head gasket.

thanks jim

I don't have any strong opinions on the subject, but I did hear head gaskets compared to fuses for the combustion chamber. Like, the gasket will go before the piston or the connecting rod. It makes some sence to me, I'd rather replace a few head gaskets over breaking a connecting rod or blowing out a piston. I'd like to hear some more insight into this myself. Thats just one thing I heard and it seems to hold some reason behind it.

I believe the head bolt hole on a 5.0 head are to small for a 5.8 headbolt, but I believe they can be machined. If the E-Bay heads don't have any fancy port work done I won't by them for that price, by the time you get the holes enlarged for the head bolts you could have just bought new heads that don't require any work. As for o-ringed or not the o-ring allows higher boost levels w/out gasket blow out. On a stock bottom end I would rather blow a gasket instead of a rod, but on a built bottom end I'd o-ring them to take full adv. of the boost w/out gasket failure.

I hope someone will confirm/correct me if I'm right/wrong.

If your going to get some trickflows, order them through Dave at www.jdsperformance.com

The bolt holes just need to be drilled out with a 1/2" bit on a drill press. Took me about 10 minutes. Dave has the best prices I have ever seen on these heads, and also has free shipping.

As for being 0-ringed, I prefer not to. I would rather blow a head gasket than put a hole in a piston, or send a rod through the side of the block.

I have had experiences with o-rings. I will start off by saying do NOT use o-ringed heads. That type of thing is for someone running some ungodly amount of boost or nitrous. And even then, a lot of guys don't use them. They are nothing except a pain in the ***, and you'd better hope the ring grooves are cut deep enough. Mine weren't and I couldn't get them to seal. They are more trouble than they are worth, not to mention the gaskets cost more. There are 2 good reasons not to use them, one is what someone else said. Think of the head gaskets as fuses, I'd rather blow a gasket than break a piston or rod. The second is that if you need o ringed heads with 15 lbs of boost because you have sealing issues, then there is something else wrong. 15 lbs is not worthy of o-rings. I can only suggest from my experience not to use them unless you have a race car. I can also attest that I am not the only one to have problems with them. Also if you ever have to remove the heads because of a problem and find they are warped and have to resurface them, then you have to regroove them. I also should note that with o-rings, the head must be exactly straight. Most of the time the head can be out a couple of thousandths, but if it is with those damned o-ring gaskets, you'll have sealing issues. Take what I've written for what it's worth.

Also, if those heads on eBay have ever been installed on an engine, even if for 2 minutes, then walk away from them. You can get brand new ones for that. And if you should decide to buy them, you'll have to drill the bolt holes out to 1/2". Easily done on a drill press.
