The dealer says my hesitation prob is being caused by oil in two cylinders? They dont know what is causing this and have a call into somewhere to see if I can get a new engine! Thats good right?
Has anyone else had probs with oil in cylinders?
let me know.
Thanks, tigger

Hey,

I have the same problem on my 01 L, three cylinders are oil fouled, truck uses excessive oil (quart every 600 miles) and will smoke on startup if it is left to idle before shutting down (try that on yours).

My new engine was ordered from AER yesterday, at that time they had 58 in stock and the part number for a 01 is 1L3Z-6006-HARM. I spoke directly with the 5.4 program engineer and he reassured me that the motors were indeed new and complete less manifolds, supercharger and wiring. Mine should be here next week and then I hope I am able to beat the living HELL out of my truck at will with no worries.

I work at a dealer. The RM at the end of the part # means remanufactured. Have just recieved one and and it is a long block with pan, front cover and valve covers on it. I,m NOT saying that you may not get a new engine or any part from Ford with a reman part # because I have seen it in the past. I did talk to the Ford hot line and was told they are indeed reman. I'm not sure who you talked to but will see if I can get more info and get back. The engine has been installed and runs great. One good thing about current reman parts is that ford either does the rebuild or oversees it. It use to not be that way and we saw problems that we do not see any more.

I'm in the middle of my oil consumption test. Using 1qt every 600 miles. Going to the dealer later this week for my final oil check and then the dealer will contact SVT for direction.

Will let you know after the test.....

MyRedToy,

I'm a dealer guy too. I spoke with the 5.4 engine program director Dave Walker at AER (Ford's engine remanufacturer) at length about this subject and was reassured several times that the 58 motors they had in stock (as of Tuesday) were brand new recrates from the Ford assembly line. They have not started to reman the 01 motors yet and are not projected to do so until next month. I even spoke with Shane who handles all of the AER warranty claims just to back up what Dave said, didn't want any misunderstandings. Trust me if I thought this motor was a reman I would not have ordered it, no offense to the rebuilder but my truck had a problem since day one (Oct 29th start date :) ) and will be repaired to new specs or a new truck will replace the one I purchased.

BTW- I was also told that they mixed the part number up (imagine that) and that the 01 is listed as 1L3Z-6006-GARM when it is really a 1L3Z-6006-HARM (which is what I ordered). Fingers are crossed...

Steve, what dealer do you work at? In parts? I'm at Delray Lincoln Mercury and we ship a lot of parts to TX dealers especially airbags (our specialty).

Work at Tommie Vaughn in Houston in truck reapir shop. The GARM is what we got for the 99 we just finished. Was told by parts 01 had a different part # but didn't write it down so that is probably it. I know what you mean though about part #'s. Hopefully now that Nasser is gone things might change. Didn't get a chance to call back but want to because it's beem my experence if you call and talk to 3 differnet people you will get 5 different answers most of the time.:D

Well my new motor showed up today and it is in fact a "New" motor. Had to order a few gaskets to complete the install but my beast should be back in business by the middle of next week. Taking the time to upgrade a few pieces on the new engine before the install, hoping this engine will be good for my goal of a 12 second ET.

RM

That RM in the part# means only one thing! REMAN.
If its new you got a good deal!!!!!!!!!

i use about that much oil... but i think mine is due to fuel mixture... i dont know... will have to purchase bigger mass air then i will see...

FAT,

See my post above for explanation on why the motor is new with a RM part # suffix (Ford re-crate). BTW I sold just under $6 million in Ford parts last year wholesale, trust me I know all about the RM stuff, I will say it is MUCH better than Uncle Freddy's parts (Fred Jones) :D .

According to DoesII the HARM is right at $3600 cost if I remember correctly, not bad I guess well at least when compared to a Powerstroke.

MYREDTOY,

Do you happen to remember replacing an engine in a 2001 Red L about September/October 2001? Mr. Nicar was my rep.

I got a re-man engine then. Only bad thing was the last cyl blew a plug out (driver's side) which broke the coil pack retaining bolt. After I got the truck back and did a plug change I notice that the new coil was just shoved back on the plug and the old manafold was there, with a broken stud still in it

No problems, there is a parallel line that runs close to the end of the coil pack, to which I zip-stripped the coil pack stem to. Holds it in place perfectly. Now I don't have to worry about the last bolt in a plug change, getting it in is a pain. :D

Not ranting on you, just ranting. TV Ford's service dept has treated me better than any other Ford dealer. They are the "BMW" of Ford Service depts.

The faculities are scarry lookin' tho. Looks like a chop shop.

I'm getting a new engine in a week or two. :D

I took my L to the dealer yesterday, 1/29/02. Down 1 quart in 430 miles (approx). This completed my 'oil consumption test.'

The service manager, Robert Rice, disappeared and came back with some oil. He topped off the oil and said that the engine specialist, Jeff, and the shop manager would make the call on what action is required.

Right then Jeff comes around the corner takes a look at it, he has been involved in the 'oil consumption test' from the beginning, turns to look at Robert, then they both turn and say, "We'll order your new engine today and it should be here in about 3 to 5 days."

On Kerrdogg's suggestion I'm going to see if Jeff will install the NGK plugs and the Hypertech #1011 - 160 degree thermostat while they're at it. I'll have to provide those parts of course.
I will also see if they will check the 02 sensor and the cats for any oil contamination. Maybe I can talk them into putting on my long-tube headers, etc. :D

Hey Greesed I never told you to mod your truck (NGK's & Thermostat) we all know these trucks are perfect as delivered and need no mods what so ever! I like the long tube idea though, heck I am still debating on stuffing some Manley rods in the new engine and rebalancing, whoops was that out loud :D .

Actually all my accompaning parts showed up today and I am going to see if the tech can jump on this project Thursday. Get to cruise a 02 Sable as a loaner, too bad the local 1/4 mile track isn't open ;) .

Hey, Was just wondering if antbody ever had any trouble getting a new motor cause they said it was something you did to the truck???

I talked to my service manager this morning about the suggestions that Kerrdogg made in an e-mail about checking the 02 sensors, cat , and blower to make sure they are clean of any oil residues.
He said no problem and if I could please forward Kerrdogg's e-mail to him so that he could share it with the engine specialist.

Cool, huh! A service manager and engine specialist who care about me.

If they keep this up I'll have to dig a little deeper for a tip. I know that we are supposed to receive this kind of service anyway, but it sure is refreshing to get it.

I'll post here when the engine comes in.

Later
Cliff
