LS1 vs 00 L

Hey my buddy has a ls1 convertible ramair TA w/6 spd. He has a chip, air filter stuff, 4.11's, and cat back. How would I do? We'll race some time I guess just to set the pecking order. He hasn't had it that long 5 mo's or so and he's not a professional driver so I was hoping he couldn't shift that great. I figure I'll lose but I was wondering what the consensus was? My 2000 L has jdm street chip, 90mm, cone filter, b-bypass and stock everything else.

I think you'll take him--assuming your L is running right. You should definitely take him from a standing start--up to 80 or so.

Yeah, make sure you try it from a standing start. Just don't roast the tires, and you should get the jump. From a roll would swing things more to his favor, IMO.

Hell yeah you can take him! Stock he should be running 13.5. His mods dont respond as well as mods put on the Lightning, that is why everyone one is so jealous of this machine. Just race him up to 80-100mph and do it with a smile!!!!!!!

I may have to think differently here. With those gears, he will probably take you off the line pretty hard, but you may catch him in the 60+ mph range.

Seriously though....Like the others have said, just race him from a stop. You should be able to jump him pretty good. LS1 M-6's are VERY difficult to launch on street tires, so you have a sizeable advantage there. Your Auto vs his Manual will give you an additional advantage at first. Tack on the fact that he has a 'Vert (HEAVY) and the odds continue to go in your favor. His mods really don't add up to much. It's likely that the chip gives him less than 5 hp (they're pretty worthless on mostly stock LS1's). The gears/Air Lid do more for him than anything....the lid being worth 12-15 hp or so. You should be able to maintain a pretty good lead until 90 or so....after that, I wouldn't get your hopes up.

To be fair (since he IS a friend), I would race using various setups. Try it a couple times from a stop, then a couple times from a 25 mph punch, then once or twice from a 60 punch. That'll give a better idea of how your L compares....that way when you race other cars you'll know where you have the advantage.

Good luck to you....be sure to let us know how it goes.

13.5 with 4.10's who is driving that thing. I have a buddy with an SS 6 speed lid and cat-back with the 4.10's and he is running right about 13.1-13.3.

So I guess I am a minority here that thinks the T/A has a chance.

.

Can the T/A haul home a riding lawnmower? Or anything else? I don't think so. I don't race F bodies, apples to oranges, I think.

I think he'll have a hard time hooking up. Don't worry about it, just take him from a stop and have a good time. From a roll, go from 20 or so, as long as you can drop to first.

I dogged my friend with a 2001 TA Ram air(K&N, flowmaster exhasust)! I was stock back then and he had ran 13.3 previously, an my previous best was 14.11. I guess what I'm trying to say is that who gets to the line first wins and anything can happen on any given night!

This is the golden question..........Does he have street tires?
If so its up in smoke for him............he will probably lose but you better know how to launch;)

I think the WS6 will win. I have several here that have work but no vortec and they are running 770s in the 1/8. The best I hope to do after I change to 373s is maybe 790s. Currently with a 4 lb pulley, chip and MTETs and 355s I ran an 8.07 today.

If he any kind of a driver, you should be looking at his taillights all the way to 80mph, then his lights will become dimmer and dimmer!
Seriously, most guys that drive sixspeeds don't have a clue how to drive them. And to top it off he has a set of 4.11 on top of that. He will go up in smoke unless he is running Nitto drags, is he?
If you don't get him in the first 60' it is all over for you ,unless he misses a shift. I've seen a few of those LS1's go down the track and they are stout. My best advise is get the 4lb lower pulley the race him. Now i think the chips are in your favor. These LS!'sCamaros vettes and TA's do real good in the last 400' of the track.

L VS LS1

Being an F body owner and a Lightning owner I pay close attention to both and have many tight friends who own LT and LS1 F bodys. A stock 6speed w/ 3.42 gears is good for 8.80s to 9.0s @ 81/82 mph in the eight mile depending on driving skill on radial tires. Add 4.10 gears to a 6speed car will pick the car up 1 to 2 tenths should the driver be able to hook the car up. This will be tough to do on radials being that it is hard enough to launch a 3.42 car. Fully hooked your friends car should run 8.2s to 8.4s given the mods he has done at around 84 to 85 mph but this will take some type of tire to do so. My lightning ran an 8.29 at 85mph on the same set up you have w/ 3.73 gears on F1s and was consistant 8.3s all day long. This was however a prefect 50 degree day w/ bone dry air. This being the case you and your friend should be neck and neck through a quarter mile and then he will start to pull off do to aerodynamics. On the other hand I have seen completely stock LS1 automatics go high 8.40s at 83 mph on radials and have a friend w/ a LS1 going 7.70 at 91mph on stock eagle GSCs w/ ported heads, cam and exhaust. What a difference the automatic makes! hope this helps!

Toast him!!!

Have confidence in yourself and you will win this race, you have the machinery to do it, just hook up at the start and you'll get him at the end. I would drive it for you but I'm sure you would get more satisfaction if you do it yourself, good luck, give 'em hell, John H.

i just raced an 01 SS with my stock 01L, from a 30 mph roll. I jumped on him at first, but then at 120 mph, his spoiler was at my front bumper and we shut it down.
