Hey Im lowering my lightning and was wondering about tire size. Whats the next size lower. Im going with a 1"/2" drop. I really dont care about ride because its not my daily driver. Thanks :tu:

Seems like some people have been going to the 275/50/17 nittos.

That's probably what i will try next time around.

My truck has a 1"/2" and I'm running stock size tires. It works ok, except that it rubs on the front suspension when parking, and occasionally the front tires hit the fenderwells on big bumps.

I stil haven't seen the 50-series on a mild drop like mine, so i have no idea what it will look like.

They look really tough on a 3"/4" drop though. I think i want to go to that drop eventually, but it's a good bit more expensive.

SWEET!!!

Hey Guys. I just put a set of the Nitto NT450 270/50/17s on my Gen1 about a week ago. Its dropped 1.5"/2" and they look GREAT! This is how Ford should have set the truck up from the factory. You will LOVE these tires. Ill try and get some pics in the next few days and get them posted. Trust me, they rock! :D

I noticed that only nitto sells this size, is that true? I looked on tirerack and they do not carry anything in that size 275/50/17.

srdstang,

I noticed the same thing when looking for tires. Yes so far Nitto is the only company that makes 275/50/17 size tires. You have to call tirerack.com and let them know what you want. I called them and got a set of four Nitto's 450 NT 275/50/17 for $600 bucks to my door. I recieved the tires in 3 days. You can see the tires on the picture below.

I had 275/60/17 Goodyears with a 1.5/2" drop and it looked good and had no problems rubbing. I just put BFG 255/50/17's on in preparation for going to the 3/4 drop. Trust me, if all you want to drop the truck is 1.5/2 then you will not need anything different than stock size. The tires sit in the wheel wells and it looks very good. Anything smaller and you have this huge wheel well gap that looks like a$$!

Can't wait till mine is lower ...:)

I can tell you that on a 1.5"/2" drop the 275/50/17s certainly dont look like a$$! You have tires (255/50/17) that are just too small. Why would you put a tire skinnier than stock on a Lightning anyway? SPIN CITY!!

Iv got 255/45/17...and i'v got plenty of width....but i was preparing to lower at least 2"/3" so i went with the lower tire..and man does it handle great...i love it...i just wish i could swing the lowering kit. .....any tricks would be great if anybodys got one....:tu:

I got my 1/2 kit from http://www.lightningforceperformance.com/
and it was only $220 with shipping. Its only front springs and rear shackles.

look out

Just a heads up for those of you that want to go to a 3/4 drop from the 1 1/2 drop. Before you do the 3/4 drop you need to put your stock front springs on or else you'll get a 5/4 drop. With that kind of drop you'll be dragging your front dam all the time. Just looking out.

Alex

I'm waiting to develope pictures of my truck in stock height with 275/50/17 tires. I thought it looked more sporty.

Guys I have the 3/4 drop (I think I might be the original, did in spring of 94. Damn...) and I run the 275-50-17 rear and 255-55-17 front. It looks just about right to me and as others have said that 275-50 will work on the front. I used to run the 275-40-17's (because there was no alternative back in the day) and they looked dumb. They were just to small and they rode like crap! I 110% recommend the 275-50's.

No not at all. With the 275/50/17s the speedo is off by 7%. At 50mph its only wrong by 3.5mph. At 70 its just under 5mph off. I really like the extra uumph at the stop lights and the mileage is probably only 1mpg loss at hiway speeds. Around town it wont change at all.
