Looking at a 93

What can I expect from this vechile? 1/4 mi times, handleing,. What sholud I look for? I drove it and dected no misses and it shifted well. The only prob is the ignition which the dealer said they fix. They are asking 7900 it has 71k on it. What are the hp/tq numbers?
The only thing I don't like is the prev owner put a ,for lack of a better term, a windsheild screen and a small cover on the back of the truck. Matching color but I still don't care for it.
Tires look good and the brakes felt good.
What knid of maint am I looking at??
thanks
Mace

Price sounds pretty good, miles aren't too bad.

If it is well maintained, i would expect about 210hp/300tq, and mid 15s in the quarter mile.

Is the paint good? If it looks good, I think you might be in luck.

Hey, great to hear you are looking at a 93:) These trucks handel better than I thought they would so take her on a fun road and find out.The paint can be a problem on these trucks(No clear coat:( Like BLoG said should run mid 15's.Good luck on finding one you like.

Just my .02

Expectations: A little over two tons of pure excitement ! Probably one of the best all around trucks that can be had. (Short of a Gen 2)

1/4 times: Stock, mid to low 15's
Handling: Outstanding, the term "On Ramp" has a whole new meaning !

Items to look at: Radius arm bushings, Traction lock (Rear Diff.)
you covered the other two I was thinking of (Trans. & Brakes)

Stock H/P & Torq. 240/340

Maint. issues are not much different from your normal F-150 except for maybe one item. The rear Diff. "Traction Lock Clutches", I think "most" every one on the board will agree that if there is one weak spot in this would be it.

Price: You might use the "Trucks" section of this page for reference.

Hope that helps, Wayne

Grab the truck and ask ? later. Someone on here just sold their '93 w/ 211,000 for $7k. Normal problems are radius arm bushings, fading paint('93 only), fuel crossover('93's have a recall on them right now), trac-loc failure under extreme power output.

Buy the truck and we will help you go faster.

Hey Red 93,

The recall expired 12-31-01 for the crossover valve. Mace, becareful about that. The recall on the fuel crossover valve fixed about 80% of the 93's, the other 20% needed both fuel pumps to fix the problem. Get the VIN and call a Ford dealer, this way you can at least find out if it's been done...if it hasn't, you'll be better prepared if it needs it later. The fuel pumps ran about 350.00 each at a Ford dealer here. Also check for stock shocks. I just replaced mine today and it made a huge difference.

Hey BLoG. Why would a truck with just 71,000 miles lose 30 hp and 40lb/ft of torque? Especially if its taken care of.

Hey Mace...everyones mentioned about everything there is. The only thing I can think of is: watch your speedometer needle closely for strange behavior because it could be an indication of the condition of the rear end. And check the tranny fluid for any material or smell. And when you are shifting into Reverse listen for a double bump or a slow shift....It could just mean a bad transmission range sensor (which is relatively cheap) or it could mean something worse. Lastly check the rear engine seal. Some guys have it worse than others, but many of them leak a little bit. If your looking to do some mods in the future take a flashlight and check the engine block near the starter motor for the casting number "F4TE" so you can upgrade to a roller cam in the future ;)Hope it works out for you!!

I think BLoG was quoting rear wheel horse power and torque. That is about what a stock gen 1 pulls in dyno runs that I have seen. And as far as I care, rear wheel horse power and torque are the only numbers that count.

thanks for the replys. I listen again to the rear end and check for the rear main seal leak. I'll give the number to the dealer and have them run a maint check on it. What is the crossover prob??
The paint looks good except where the guy bolted on the sunshield and that thing behind the cab.
thanks again and I'l let you know tomorrow if I'm the newest owner on the board.
a few more q's When I looked under the hood the exhasut mainfolds almost looked like headers(shorties) not the big iron type. Is that stock? What are goin gto be some good cheap mods?
thanks
Mace

Yup, they have headers stock. Some cheap and easy mods:
Bump the timing (free, except for higher octane gas)
460 air inlet tube ($12)
electric-fans ($75-200)
underdrive pulleys ($75-100)
You'll definately want a new catback, anywhere from $350+
traction bars ($200-250)

Those should get you into the mid-high 14 range.

The cross over problem is with both fuel tanks. The cross over valve is a check valve that makes sure the rear take doesn't pump fuel into the front tank...and vice verse. When it fails, if you fill up both tanks and run on the rear, it will pump fuel into the front tank. If the front tank is already full, it will fill it completely to the filler neck and over flow from the gas cap. It sucks, especially for anyone whose didn't make the recall period.

looks like the dealer is going to fix the crossover.
So it looks like I'll be the next owner of a lightning
Next q... how much is the rear end fix??
sorry for so many questions.
thanks
Mace

Most guys prefer to upgrade to an Eaton rear end if the stock one breaks. The Eatons go for about $300. Im not sure what a good estimate on labor charges would be.

You sure about that? The dealer here told me the recall expired 12-31-01. Which means Ford DOESN'T have to fix it.

The recall only expired for trucks with over 150,000 miles on them. And it does only cover 93's. They will replace the fuel pressure gegulator if no cross fill is happening or if it is they will fix the fuel pump that is at falt. Time to get a new dealer if they will not fix it or call Dearborn, they just love to here from pissed off Ford owners.

stang-- I'm buying it from a dealer and I told them this was a sticking point in buying the truck. They checked and siad they would fix. It will be on the paper work I sign today and if not I walk.

Aaaaahhhhh... I was getting confused about this... I got this "reminder" notice on my desk with mail that I gotta go through and I didn't think it was THAT old!
I've had the fuel psi done before, but I think I still had the transfering of fuel after that... thought I had a bad tank at first, then seen it was coming out of the fuel neck. Hasn't done it in forever, but I haven't driven the truck in forever either. I just always ran the front tank first.
