Lightning killed by Taurus

"But [the SHO's] best was a 13.0@116.9 and the car is now making more power .... This Taurus makes 372whp and almost 400ft pounds at the wheels."

"Then the guys tell us that earlier that night [the Lightning] went 12.40's!!!@ 110."

That story is such B.S. There is no way that a 13 sec Taurus beat a L with slicks and NOS. Don't get me wrong. I tell it how it is, and if I feel this was true, I would post good kill for the taurus. But even if all the L had was slicks and 75 shot NOS, it would be able to run 12.7-12.8. I will have to raise the flag on this one!!!

See my post above comparing trap speeds. It's a Taurus with 372 whp, and is probably 1,000+ pounds lighter than a Lightning. They raced from a roll where the Taurus' FWD handicap wasn't a factor, and the Lightning got spanked. They raced from a stop (notice that the slicks were simply removed from the bed, not bolted on) and it was even until higher speeds. It's easy for me to believe.

a 13.0 @ 116?????? He would have had to hit the brakes HARD at the track to get that ET with that mph. You realize that mph is 11 sec zone???? I say something is wrong here.

Also I took a little bit of my time to read that article. Reaction times have absolutely nothing to do wth 0-60 or 1/4 ET. Period. It's just how fast you get off the line when the light turns green. The guy says "Reaction times are NOT equal in cars with identical 0-60 or 1/4 mile times.". It has nothing to do with the cars. It's the driver. That's it. Knowing how to drive the car whether it's heavier/lighter or whatever. I guess in one way his answer is correct but also they COULD have equal rxn times, 0-60, and 1/4 ET. Not usually the case but could happen. Some of his write up is legit though.

I'll just read this post and not the other (lazy) but with a front wheel drive car (bad traction) I could see how the weird et came from. MPH is really what you look at to see how quick a car is, not the et. ET (not phone home one) can be affected by a lot of things, wheel spin, lazy shifting, and others. MPH really doesn't change much compared to et. I can run a 13.9 at 101 with no wheel spin than run a 14.9 at 100 with a lot of spin.

Anyways, could happen

Traction problems, I'm sure. Getting a 144-whp FWD car to launch at the drag strip was a pain sometimes, so I can only imagine how hard a 372-whp FWD car is to launch. ;)

There's a video floating around of Lou Gigliotti's Trans Am car at the drag strip running a 13.5 @ 125 or something silly like that. Not FWD but a similar problem -- NO traction.

I had a hard time believing it after this quote - "We were on the way home from the track when we saw this really nice silver Ford Lightning. The guy pulls next to us and starts jumping at us."

Have any of you Lightning owners ever thrown rev's or jumped at a Taurus? If so, that's sad unless you know the car is fast. The only thing I'll ever throw rev's at is something that I know will make a good race, anything less and your just being a insecure bully.

I won't say I don't believe it, there's plenty of cars out there that can beat a Lightning but the story sounds a little fishy.

Actually, I know a guy named Jeremy in Florida with a turbo SHO that runs low 13s, so that's probably him in the story. :)

Well by that logic then we wouldn't have any "2G Lightning vs. R/T" stories. :D

B/S Story

If a car runs 13.0's his MPH is 101 MPH Range....My 95' Lightning runs 12.67 @ 104.68 MPH w/ DOT Approved M/T Street Slicks. If the Taurus ran 116 MPH that means it would run the 1/4 mile in the 11.60 Range....If any of you LIghtning Owners can believe that this Guys 3,700 Ib. Ford Taurus runs 11's my truck goes 8's!!!! ........LMFAO......:D

Later Guys,
Ralph Voorhees Jr.

Sounds like a perfectly legitimate story to me. Stock SHOs are all about high rpm power and have traction problems. Add a turbo to the mix (and turbo lag), and you have a car with wicked top end power and traction problems. Hence, a slow ET with a high trap speed. The SHO's trap speed is consistent with his horsepower, so I don't see any reason to disbelieve his horsepower claims.

The story also said they were pretty close until the end of 3rd gear. This is triple digit speeds. The Taurus is a high winding turbo and has much better aerodynamics. There would be something wrong if the SHO didn't walk the Lightning at 100+ mph. If someone had asked me before hand to predict the outcome of this race, I would have called it almost exactly like it went down.

The Lightning is a monster out of the hole, but a car the traps faster than a Lightning is going to have a major advantage at higher speeds.

Ralph, I know the guy - his name is Jeremy Prine. He doesn't run 11s because he can't get the car rolling. It's a FWD car and he runs it on street tires because he doesn't want to break stuff.

He's had three SHOs and was big into them back when I had mine. He's legit.

The posted trap speed is faster than any I knew of, but it's also been about two years since I checked up on his progress and it sure doesn't take 116 mph trap speeds to take down a Lightning on the highway.

My stock '91 SHO would trap at 93-94 mph, but I never ran faster than 15.30s with it. In a Lightning, that mph would be good for nearly a second faster.

Hey, Mark, I think you should change your signature to read "One of everything." ;)
