level10 shift kit question

I have a question for anyone using this shift kit. I just purchased one, and in viewing the instructions noticed the option for step 5. It states that for firmer down shifting to relocate some of the steel balls in the valve body. Does this really make a big difference on the way the kit is suppose to work or would it be okay to skip this step since it says it is optional. Any input on what you guys have done will be greatly appreciated. Thanks James.

You don't have to do it...I didn't do it...I heard that there were some changes in ball location and number between the years, and that you don't need it in any case, but definantly don't need it on 93's..

Just hear say...But I didn't monkey with the balls..

Muddmann, I know you're gonna jump on that one...

Mine didn't come with those d**n balls!!!!!

do they all!?

hahaha, and leave me alone on that one too mudd......:D

None of them come with the balls, you just rearrange the existing ones in the valve body.. If I remember right you have to tear it apart further than just the accumulator body then..Like the entire valvebody has to come down, which could be a real PITA.

thanks to everyone!

Thanks to everyone for your replies. This will save me a lot of grieve and headaches! Id rather play with marbles than tear into the valve body and mess with all those little steel balls.
James.

Level 10

 I just got finished putting in a Level 10 in my truck, and to tell you the truth, intially I was totally unhappy. I took it back to the shop, they removed all of Level 10's second gear, and replaced with borg warner... an overweight STOCK truck (weighs in at a hair over 5250) and I just ran a 15.08 with it (spinning half of first!!!). I'm impressed with that result. I thought I was going to loose the doors on the shifts too! I'm COMPLETELY satisfied with how things turned out...for being stock and all.

Later all.

Not completely Happy

I'm not completely satisfied with Level 10. Although they tried everything to try and make things right, falling very short, I found Level 10 to be quite the waist of money. The parts are all Trans-star...the entire kit can be put together for under 400, and with some shopping, an equal billet converter can be bought for about 550, and the shift kit should come from Trans-go...for about 100. I like the sound of $1050 rather than 1600. Once I had the tranny shop square up second gear, the truck is running nice again, but not like it should...not by any means. "We guarantee almost a full second off your 1/4 mile time..." and "there will be no driveability problems whatsoever, it will drive just like it did off the showroom floor til you punch it..." were the things I heard most, and turned out to be completely false. I'm happy that it is running, and running better than before, but not happy with the fact that their promises did not hold.

Right.

Yeah man after my "3 springs and one valve" got here I was like what gives? I paid $139 and it was on sale....

Oh well, live and learn.

You seriously thought you'd drop a second with just a tranny?? Unless the tranny was a HUGE problem(slipping) you aren't going to gain that. Maybe if you were running something OTHER than stock.. I wouldn't b!tch about 15.08 with almost NO engine mods..

I just put in the level 10 last weekend, and I have to say it made a world of difference! Now they all told me "hold on"when it shifts I didn't have to hold on but the shift was instantanious. I didn't bark tires on the 1/2 shift, but it did shift real quick.
I have also been told that it has a lot to do with what you have done to the truck. I probably cut my 1/4 time by a third-to-half but not by a full second.
Is the level ten supposed to pop my neck back? well it doesn't but there is a big difference.

Without a baseline I can't really say how much I've gained with my mods, but I've seen a HEAVY Gen 1 pull a 15.6-15.8 on the same day I pulled a 15.08, so I know there's been about a half second drop on my truck, but that isn't all the level 10 obviously.
You may gain maybe a tenth or something like that with the shift kit, but it does make your trucks tranny last longer.. I'm not sure on the exact gain, it'd be interesting.. It makes the truck feel alot faster, but without that time slip it's really hard to say how much it really improves the time.

A tenth of a sec. and higher trap speeds is the most common gain from the shift kit. Like Curt said, it will also save your tranny a lot of wear. Even more so the more modded you are.

Hey Black stallion. Your L doesn't bark em on the 1-2 shift?? When I put my Level 10 in my 95 my L only had underdrives, bassani headers, and a custom cat back. And let me tell you man o man did it bark on the 1-2 shift. More like spun the 1-2 shift with the occasional bark on the 2-3 shift. Now I have more mods so it barks em more but your L should be able to catch a little burn on the 1-2?!!:(

The barking really depends on the surface you're on.. I don't chirp on concrete, but watchout on blacktop.. On the strip it really depends as well.. I've been on a strip where I spun all the way through first, through the 1-2 shift, and on the 2-3 shift as well... On the street it doesn't quite do it like that...It was a HORRIBLE track though.. IRP in early November

Here in Washington the roads aren't that great. I do have the new Falken Zeix tires. I think that thorough go through is in order:confused:

Hey guys, you're confusing me. Could you guys please tell me whether you were talking about the Transmission or just the Shift Kit? The last post about burning in 2nd really confused me. I think one guy was talking about the whole tranny, but I'm lost.

Please be patient and help a kid out. :D

The Level 10 Kit includes a performance transmission system, a hydrosystem (the shift kit), and the option of a billet converter. I'm talking about the WHOLE THING, while some are just talkin the shift kit.

Later!
