A friend of mine is thinking of trading his 98 F150 for a 98 Mystic Cobra. Anyway, we went a few miles out of town and raced from a dead stop twice and I beat him pretty bad both times. The rear main seal is leaking on the Cobra and he said it was causing the clutch to slip alittle so that could be the reason I beat him but, on the other hand I think I could take him even if the clutch was'nt slipping. It felt pretty good spanking a Cobra in a GT. Oh yeah, the Cobra is bone stock not even tinted windows and my g/f's car has an H-pipe, flowmasters and Pro 5.0 shifter so its not modded much at all.

What year GT is your girlfriend's? Sounds strange to me, I had a '96 Cobra before my Lightning. Can he drive??

Her GT is a 2001 and the Cobra is a 96, my mistake. If he gets this car, I'll run him again when the slipping clutch is fixed. As far as his driving goes, I'm not the best driver in the world either so that can't have too much to do with it. It was probably the slipping clutch but, if he gets the car we'll find out!

I am not suprised!

My father in law has a 99 Cobra, we went to a local 1/8 strip one Saturday morning. The people that owned the track was doing maintance, and told us to go at it, the time clocks weren't working.

The first run was murder, I was in my Capri (a 22 year old car) and he was in the '99. Once he learned how to launch the 'lil 4.6 (wind it high enough not to bog, but not so high that you spin too bad, turn the traction control off--this makes a big difference), the turn-out was still pretty sad, I sort of felt bad for him! By the last run I was watching him in my rear view and just staying ahead barely, granny shifting, taking it easy.

Now later on he got revenge, we were comming home from somewhere, going west on 280 in Phenix City, Al. He and his wife were in the Cobra and me and mine were in the L. From about a 60 MPH roll we lined up and went, he just pulled away, not walked off, not freakin' disappeared, but pulled away pretty well. We stoped at about 95-100. I'd like to go to a road course with him though, in the L.

'97 Cobra run

4.33, Dr Gas X-pipe, Mac cat-back, Pro-50 shifter, K&N drop-in, underdrives.. That's all, full weight, 245/45/17 Pep Boys Futuras..
12.87 @107. Go see it in the video links, lots of potential in those cars....

Tell your buddy to make sure that seal gets fixed before he buys it. I've got a friend that works on Stangs on the side and he's got a '96 Cobra that he's putting a trans and exhaust on. I guess it's a mofo getting the starter bolts out and pulling the trans. Ford changed from the nice rear mount bolts on the 5.0's to internal bolt heads on the 4.6's.

I've changed a few clutches in the modmotor Mustangs and the top starter bolt is a son of @itch!! Once the top starter bolt is out the tranny comes out pretty easy and the top starter bolt stays out.

brnout, I know these cars have alot of potential but, I don't think this Cobra is going to run 12's with that list of mods you made. I'm not saying that it has'nt been done, I just don't think its going to happen on this car.

Cobra potential

Greatly determined by the driver.. Unless this car has a problem with the motor or transmission, or is towing a trailer, decent air, and the mods I listed will get 12's with a 1.89 60', and a couple of power shifts. Incidentally, this '97 ran a 13.4@103 bone stock (there were three at the track that ran low 13's with nothing or little bolt ons and street tires, including a Mystic '96), a 13.2@105 with gears and cat-back, and the 12.87@107 with the rest (other run that day was a 13.15 @ almost 108). Incidentally, I raced a '98 Cobra with 3.73's and 275'40 street tires, and headers and the full exhaust, and he ran 13.60's.. (2.0 60' and slow shifts made for a 104 mph car).. Gotta get gears and good shifter, and shift hard at the right side of the tach.. Bob Cosby and others are running 12's in these cars as well..
