Hey guys first of all it is good to be back. About 1 month ago i put a off road x pipe and i was told by another nloc member thati woould have no need for the smog pump. He told me to take it off but i have no idea how to take it off. Can some one give some instructions? Also what part number or size do i need for the belt and how would i route it. Also he told me about another pullie so that the belt would not slip off. Please help me out i wnat to try to do that this weekend.

I removed mine with no ill wills or check engine light. I ran with a short belt bypassing the smog pump first to see if anything happend. After a couple of weeks with nothing happening I removed the pump and related plumbing. I capped off the line going to the rear of the engine, I didn't want to get into a wrestling match with it.

hey man,

very simple to do, actually. i never did get the other pulley, as i didnt have belt loss problems until i put the blower on.

there is, however, alot of hardware that goes along with the pump, that is essentially worthless once the pump is gone. i dont know if your looking to go completley smog-free or not.

if you just wanna lose the pump, theres only 2 bolts that hold it on, its kinda self-explanitory...

as for the belt routing, there should be a sticker on your radiator support that shows the route. just ignore the smog pump pulley, all the rest is the same.

im also not sure the belt size for you, as i had underdrives on along with having no pump, therefore longer belt than you will need.

have fun :)

The belt length is 94.5" for stock pulleys & no smog pump!

I by-passed the pump before I actually removed it. There's a LOT of plumbing lines, vaccum lines, hoses and etc..... that have to be removed!

I wouldn't have removed them at all, but I did so at the same time I did a head swap. Wasn't too bad that way! If it wasn't for that, I would have just left the pump on!

I am running a complete 1993L engine in a 1989 4x4. When I installed the engine I removed the pump and associated hoses, pipes, crossover pipe between the heads, etc. With stock pulleys on the Lightning engine, a belt for a stock 1989 5.0 truck will put the spring tensioner dead center of it's range. Have never had any lights or other problems. Truck runs great. Good luck, Greg

Hey just wanted to let you guys know that i took off the smog pump and the belt that fit after going to auto store 5 times is the 90 inch belt if you have underdrive pullies. It cleaned up the engine bay really well.

hmmm, my belt is (was) 90" with no smog, and underdrives. although, the underdrives consisted only of crank and water pump...perhpas that figures in?!?

I just bought a smop pump eliminater and put on my truck. I only had to shorten the belt one inch, and I also removed all of the hoses. It was fairly simple.

Where Y'at Brandon, Here's a question on the same line. Can you run the short by-pass belt with the cats still on? Like at the track without overheating the cat.

Smog Test

So I'm guessing that none of you have to take the sniffer test, right???? I don't think I would get a way with removing the smog pump here in CA.

Along those same lines, my newly aquired truck still has the pump but doesn't have all the associated crap hooked up since it has long tubes...here in CA -land of the smog nazis- I'm going to have to put it all back on! Anybody know if there's a header that will work with this BS? I was thinking of doing the Bassani thing head-to-tailpipe.
