FAST!!! Roller cam conversion help needed.

Guys: One of my lifters has gone south, and while the lower intake is off and we are switching lifters I figured I might as well go with a roller cam setup.

I need part #'s or specs for all the components that need to be changed.

I have access to these parts (Thanks Russ):)
. Roller Lifters (From 5.0 mustang)
. Roller Cam (From 1991 5.0 mustang)

I need the specs on:

Pushrods. What length?
Spider?
Dogbones?
Distributor gear?
Valve springs? My heads are stock..stock springs at 140K miles.

My engine is basically stock with 1.72 roller rockers.

Thanks in advance I need this as soon as possible..I am currently searching the old topics to see if the new BBS has the archives of old info.
:D

Dave, when I converted my truck over I used everything from a 5.0 Mustang except the pushrods. And off the top of my head I can't remember the length.

You guys crack me up.:p :p

Thanks for the pushrod length Jeff.

Now, What do you guys think about me using that Mustang roller camshaft? I'm running the nitrous so it favours the exhaust a little..will it be a decent gain?

Raymond: Will it have any idle problems? Will I need to EEC tune them out?

Finally, I want to also replace the valve springs (140k miles), should I just get new "stock" GT 40 valve springs or another type?

Thanks again.:)

Where Y'at Dave, Is that cam going to work with speed density? If it will, I know what I'm going to be looking for next! So who has the specs on that cam?
If you smell smoke its cause you got me thinkin';)

Hey guys/gals,

I'm new to the fuel injected/computer controlled Ford small block and wanted to make sure I have this right. I have a 93 Lightning, not sure on the cast #, but I can take the roller parts, minus the cam and use it on the L? I'd like to do this, I thought I saw a post that the 93 did not have roller blocks and that some mods would have to be done. I'm taking notes on all this so that I can start to gather parts and be ready for modifications. I just don't know that much about computer controlled setups. I traded my bigblock 89 LX for this truck. Big horsepower drop, but still fun to drive. Anyway, thanks to everyone that responds to questions like this. Even though Im not the one asking, its real helpful.:)

Hi Dave, when I converted my truck over to roller I used a buddy's Mustang Lunati cam that he had laying around (like most of us I was trying to save a few $$). I wasn't that happy with it. There's a couple of things to consider:

A Mustang cam is generally made for a small displacement, stick shift, lightweight vehicle. Our trucks are heavy lower reving automatics.

5.0 Mustang cams are generally made with mass air in mind, you you can try to tune around that with your EEC-Tuner, but it's never perfect.

If you already have a roller cam you can send it to Cam Motion to be re-ground. If I remember right it runs around 175.00 to do it. It really is money well spent, you'll be a lot more satisfied with the way the truck runs and drives.

George, some 93's have the roller ready block too, you'll need to get the casting number to know for sure. Yes you can use everything from a Mustang 5.0 except the pushrods, read above about the cam concerns :)

First of all, it's good to be back on the site;) .

I've got a pumped-up lifter problem, too. However, I'm not in the mood-nor do I have the money- to change the cam, change to roller lifters, change to mass-air, or install r/rockers. Can anyone recommend a good set of hyd. lifters for a completely stock powerplant?

United laid me off, and zee funds is low.

Raymond and all: Thanks for the great info:)

I am going to go with the Mustang camshaft because:
. It is free...Thanks Russ94:D
. It is biased towards the exhaust. (nitrous)
. It will allow my motor to rev higher. Thanks EEC tuner.

BTW Downs Ford has some great prices on the roller conversion kit for our trucks. They have either the E303 cam or a Lunati cam that is a part of the package. The pushrods cost $45, the Spider and retainers together cost $45 and the distributor gear costs $15. not too shabby.

Hope it all goes well..I will post results as they occur.:)
