electric fan kit questions

The next step I thought about doing was the electric fan kit and the cobra R waterpump. Here are my questions:
1) what performance gains in E.T./MPH?
2) ease of installation?
3) is the waterpump a nessesity and who has the best deal on it?

any other info is welcome. I talked to JDM about the kit but they want over $100 for pump which I had heard could be gotten alot cheaper. thanks!

i1,

I do have an electric fan kit. I quite honestly can't tell you if, or how much, of an ET reduction I saw. I guess I don't pay enough attention. I do think, however, that my engine revs up considerably quicker, (I would have to think it freed up the crank appreciably). I do not have a Cobra R water pump, so no input for you there, sorry.

P.S. Cool user ID! :)

Thanks for the input. When I talked to JDM they told me that they use the cobra R waterpump that is made by Ford, this leads me to believe that it can be found cheaper. Dont get me wrong I am a huge JDM fan, however I have found that they have a big mark up on Ford factory parts. Case in point is the 4x4 trans pan. It is a ford piece and they wanted $75 dollars for it. I found the same part w/ filter for half as much.

Myself and Silver-Bolt installed the JDM Fan Kits on both of our Lightnings last week. The job JDM did on the harnesses is simply amazing. It it 100% plug and play, it looks factory and the instructions are step-by-step perfect, complete with photos.

Check out the installation instructions:

You can actually see how much this fan sucks air too. I dropped one of the instruction sheets in front of the grill and it got sucked up against it and just stayed there. =)

My favorite part is how quiet and smooth the truck sounds now. It was the first thing I noticed when I started the truck. =) At highway speeds it is so smooth . . . the factory fan is obnoxiously loud.

I'm sure you can get the pump somewhere else cheaper. For me, it was eaiser to just order it all at once from the same place. It didn't hurt that at the time he was having a killer NLOC special on both the fan kit and the pump. =)

There is a real good artical in Jan'02 issue of MM&FF on JDM's install of his electric fan, Cobra R style water pump and lower blower pulley. Good step-by-step instructions and pics. It's well worth getting and looking at and will probably answer alot of your questions.

I got the electric fan with the cobra R water pump and babolt's throttle body. The gas mileage I think is alot better. I will figure with this tank what I am getting now thou. Like previously mentioned the truck just plan old runs better now. It pulls alot harder and you can tell the engine runs alot better. The fan is really quiet to, you only really hear it when you turn the truck off and hear it winning down. I was told alot of guys with F-150's do just the fan because it will greatly increase the life of the engine. Great modification and helps the truck out alot, unlike most mods.

Right... Cheaper source

"Just remember you get what you pay for"
With the JDM fan you get all the R/D that came with it.
And with the cheaper one you get the um, same thing(borrowed R/D).
I am not trying to start anything I just believe in only using the best for my truck.

Black2000,

My point was not to find a cheaper part but to find the part at a better price. Everything that has been done to my truck so far is a result from parts I bought through JDM and I will continue to do so in the future. I will for sure buy the electric fan kit from Jim, however the waterpump (Cobra R) is a Ford issue part and Ford is the company that R/D that particular part. I have found that on another Ford factory part that JDM had a sizeable mark up over retail. I also believe in buying the best for my cars but if I can save some money along the way only seems smart. Besides, Jim is going to get all my money anyways;)

I agree to a point.!?

I've just read too many times of guys going the cheaper route to just end up spending more to fix and or replace those "Less expensive" parts. Just hate to see someone else go through that. I got burnt on some cheap parts once and I know how much it sucks to try and get some descent service back from those guys to replace their parts. I am not flaming any of the Vendors here, just some bad ones else where. As you can see in my Sig. I've spent my fare share of $$$ and have done research on each. So If I gotta spend a little extra to be a sure of the Customer Service to follow that part then I don't really mind that bad.
Course this is just my .02

One last thing I promise. Does anyone know how it was that did the R&D for Ford on the Cobra and it's parts????

When I posted that Sal's electric fan kit, I meant the cost was cheaper, not the quality. Never heard of Sal making anything inferior.
I mean, if JDM's is a plug n play, well that's fine. You have about $20 worth of wire and
connectors that Sal's does not have, but a price difference of over $150. Think that is smart shopping?

And I don't know who did the R&D on the Cobra, but I bet I know who said they did.

I dont know if you are hinting around as to who did the R&D on the cobra pumps but I can assure you this, Ford paid that person an assload of money for their work and is reflected in the retail cost of the pump when you buy it from Ford:)
