E4OD transmission

I’m putting a 1993 lightning engine with an E4OD, it has a plastic plug where the speed sensor in earlier E4OD went. I’m using a Lincoln mark VIII rear end, it doesn’t have a speed sensor in it. I’ve been told to put an older shaft that has been turned with grooves in it. The transmission has to be totally torn down. Any suggestions?

What are you using to control the trans? Something like a Quick4? If so then a reluctor ring on the driveshaft or rear end yoke with a hall sensor would work fine.

I was going to use a Quick 4 but was told by them that I needed a speed sensor of some kind. I’m not familiar with a reluctor ring or hall sensor. Who makes them and how exactly do they work.

You have to have a sensor of some kind to tell the computer how fast something (driveshaft or axle) in the driveline is turning - that's how the computer works out the vehicle speed.

The sensors are basically a toothed metal ring with a sensor that can detect the change in a magnetic field as a tooth passes by. The number of teeth that pass in a certain amount of time gives the speed that the ring is turning. From that the speed can be worked out by how many revs of the ring per rev of tires and the circumference of the tire.

IIRC that's just an 8.8 adapted for IRS. Wouldn't be hard to add a speed sensor to it. It wouldn't be fun doing it in an IRS housing, but not hard. I'd probably get a cast aluminum cover and put the sensor in it instead of working over the housing.
