What are the advantages of changing over to the aluminum shaft? Reducing the rotating mass is usually benificial, but does this 8lb reduction account for anything on the L? Will a shaft out of a 2001 slip right in? I was all for changing it over until I heard of some aluminum shafts breaking, should I just stick with the steel since I am adding a 3lb lower, breather, bypass, plugs, psp vavle body, new reburn of the chip, and 2" lowering shackles. (Once I get a lift at work). I am also planning on some traction bars and maybe some drag radials depending on the traction i get with the above mods.

Aluminum D/S

Less Rotating mass weight means less drag on the transfer of power from flywheel to wheels. Making it more efficient. A stock item on L's for 01/02. I offer a great price on them. Also have a couple of traction control set ups for you. Let me know If I can help.

I've never heard of an aluminum shaft breaking, and I've seen a stock steel type bust at the track... If you are racing on slicks, a driveshaft loop is critical no matter what the composition of the driveshaft. It's not always the driveshaft itself that fails, sometimes the u-joints, etc... a loop is cheap insurance. Regarding the benefit of the aluminum one, the only thing I ever saw from it on my Mustang was better balance. My stock one vibrated like crazy around 90-100 MPH, I put in an aluminum one and the vibration went away.

BTW, I put over 825 horses through that aluminum driveshaft and it never hiccupped once, with a manual trans, which is harder on driveline components than an auto.

Last year there were pictures of a broken aluminum drive shaft on the www.f150online.com bbs (do a search). I believe that it was caused by the rearend twisting and the driveshaft rubbing on the frame. So the cause of the problem, was really the lack of traction bars.

My 2 cents worth...and I am installing an aluminum drive shaft on my 99 this week:D Traction bars soon;)

Like they said the aluminum shaft should fit no problem. As for them breaking it seems like the only broken ones I saw were from the axle wrapping out and its my understanding that traction bars will keep it from wrapping up, and therefore not break the drive shaft.
