Drag race vs. F Body club

Anybody wanna attend a private session at Maryland International Raceway against the Mid-Atlantic F Body club? :D

A couple times a year, the MAFB rents MIR for its "Dragathons," which are basically time trials followed by bracket racing. They usually include the local Y Bodies (Corvettes) and sometimes invite other non-Camarobird/Vette groups (Supras, Vipers, Impalas have run in the past).

I have a source on the inside who lobbied on our behalf, and the MAFB is extending an invitation to us Lightning owners to join them at their next Dragathon. Here are the details:

The cost is $20 to race from 9am to 2pm, and
below is a copy of the four classes of competition we will have.

If you can guarantee at least a minimum participation of at least 10 "vehicles" I will glady open the event up to the Lightnings, but we really would like to see at least 20 or more. The tradition has been "VVF" style (vette, viper, fbody shootout) but this year we are modifying the format so that all the cars compete in a mixed format rather than one manufacturer vs. another. This way you will have a chance to line up against the vipers during bracket racing rather than eliminate your own
field down to a final winner like in previous years. It will be more fun this way.

The Dragathon will be Saturday May 4.

The MAFB is a cool group of gearheads, so this should be pretty fun.

If you are interested in racing your G1 or G2, just reply here or send me an e-mail. So far, we have:

The MAFB voted on May 4 -- they just need to sort everything out with the track.

So perhaps May 4 is maybe definite. ;)

Welp, it looks like we got the minimum # to enter The Show (see update at end of initial post). :D Hopefully we can at least double that after the date is 100% confirmed!

Just bringing this back TTT to make sure nobody forgets. ;)

Actually have a small update, cost for guests will be $12 per person. Still $20 to race.

Forget the Hoosier tires at this event

Everyone,

When looking at the www site for the event it shows 4 classes of bracket racing:

1) Manual Trans only, any tire, .500 tree
2) Any car, DOT ONLY tires, .500 tree
3) Quick 8 NA, any tire, .400 tree
4) Quick 8 Forced Induction, any tire, .400 tree

Basically, for all of us average L owners, #1, #3 & #4 are pretty much outta reach. That leaves #2. BUT, since it lists DOT tires only...those of us with the new Hoosier Drag Radials are SOL.

I have emailed the coordinator about where a Lightning fits in with Hoosier tires. Basically, its #2 or #4. If you don't qualify for #4, you MUST run a DOT tire to compete in the brackets for #2. If you do qualify for #4, you will be on a .400 tree.

It was recommended that us Hoosier owners just run on street tires if we want to compete in the brackets.

So if you plan on running the Hoosiers, plan on T&T only or going to F1s or ET Streets to compete.

He told me that maybe the rules could be changed for the fall event, but things for the May 4th event are in stone.

Of course, if you want to email him your concerns.... Email: trans-am@cox.rr.com

Either way its going to be a great day of fun and sure beats a day working.

See you there

:w

As Brian and I talked about in private e-mail, the class structure isn't really "Lightning friendly" since we're all automatics, and I don't think there are too many auto Camaros and Vettes. But seeing as how we're sort of an unknown commodity and and outside group, I don't see them restructuring the classes just for us.

However, if we have a good showing, maybe we'll be invited back, and the classes will offer more for FBodies/Vettes and Lightnings to run head-to-head in the bracket competition. :) I know the people on the MAFB list where overwhelmingly in support of inviting us this time. :)

Pat,
Please add me to your list if you still have openings. I have never raced before, so this should be fun. Hopefully, rookies are allowed!!!

Hey BrainK...

I dint know about the Hoosier Radials, but the Quick Time Pros are DOT legal. I run them on my Lightning with great results. I cant see why a bias-ply street slick would be DOT legal but a street radial wouldnt be. Any idea??
