I am on the hunt for a new truck (actually a gen 1 or 2..doesn't matter, I just miss my trucks) and stumbled across an ad in the Yahoo classifieds for a Red 02 with 111 miles on the clock....priced at an amazing 23,495.
I think that surely there is a typo here and I call the dealer...tell the lady I am in Houston and am interested in the Red 02 on the used lot. She tells me that a man bought the truck and his wife made him bring it back and trade it in on a regular truck (DOH!!). I ask her if the price in the ad is correct, 23,495, and she says that she doesn't think so but she will check. I hold for 10 minutes and she returns after conferring with the GM. The ACTUAL price for this USED truck is 28,495. Still sounds like a good deal, so I tell her that I am interested and need to trade my Corvette (99 hardtop) in on the truck. She assures me that I will hear back from her after she confers with the used car manager about the trade value of my car.
Two days pass and a different salesperson contacts me about the truck...thanking me for catching the error in the ad. He then asks me if I had been informed of the CORRECT price for this USED truck. I said yes, the lady told me that the asking is 28,495....HE SAYS, oh no its 33,495....A TEN THOUSAND DOLLAR increase from the ad and a FIVE THOUSAND dollar increase from the price I was quoted two days earlier. I told him that I wouldn't pay a PENNY over sticker for a USED truck, HELL, I wouldn't pay sticker for a NEW truck. He then tells me that Lightnings sell for 40K in the great state of Tennessee... To which I replied that I bought my 2000 for 500 over invoice BRAND NEW...and would keep looking for a proper deal on a truck.
What a crock of chit....I have worked in and around dealerships for 15 years...understand all of the pencil whipping that goes on from sales to service...but have never seen anything like this. The dealer made the holdback off of the first transaction...then tries to hit the tri-fecta on the resale after making the second holdback on the truck that the guy had to buy when he traded the L back in. HUGE SCAM.
In short...do not buy from LANCE CUNNINGHAM FORD in KNOXVILLE TENNESSEE.
