Crane Ignition?

Is anybody running this ignition in a supercharged application? I'm not sure which model I need for my truck. Should I go with the HI-6R or the HI-DSR? Thanks...

I'm running the Hi-6tr with my set-up (check sig.) What I like about the crane set-up is that is uses factory style plugs. I would also recommend getting the wiring kit to go along with it. I just put it on last summer along with the ps-91 coil. I like it so far. - Brian

I ordered the adapter harness through Jegs, the part # they have in their catalog is 270-6000-6707 and it is $16.99. You can make it work without those plugs, but I liked the cleanliness of the factory style plug-ins where ever I could have them. There are only a couple plug-ins in the kit so don't expect a whole lot. I had my mechanic do the installation of this stuff for me, so I don't know if he used every plug-in or not, but for the $20 it was worth is he if used only one of them in my opinion. Do you have a place in mind where your going to mount it? - Brian

Have the HI-6TR on the 94 Lightning. Comes with the Vortech kit. Havent had any trouble out of it. :)

Billy,
Did you do the installation yourself? I was looking at the online instructions and wondering what the difference between the basic module/points trigger hookup and the magnetic trigger hookup was (figure 2 and figure 3)? Or would I get the installation kit and follow hookup for Figure 4? The only question I had with that was: Is it only good to get that if you use the stock coil, because I'm getting the LX-92 coil?

Brian,
I'm planning on mounting it behind the driver's seat, because it says to mount it in the cab.

Thanks again,

Jake

Jake,

I am using the HI-6 (with harness) on both my Vortech supercharged Lightning and Procharged Mustang. I use programmable fuel injection systems on both (EECTUNER on Lightning and EPEC on Mustang) so I can take out timing using the computer. If you are not planning to use a programmable system then you might think about getting HI-6TR. Most chip tuners can also remove timing for boosted applications.

You don't need to mount your system in the interior unless you drive your Lightning year around. I have had one in the engine bay of my Mustang for five years now with no issue but it is only out in good weather.

:( I'm still not sure how to install this thing. My main problem is whether or not I need to use the magnetic trigger cable coming out of the box?I'm really confused as to what type of distributor I have. Also, Is it worth getting the adapter harness since I'm putting an aftermarket LX-92 coil on? The LX-92 coil has different plugs than the stock coil, and it looks like the adapter kit is only good for the stock coil? Any help is appreciated.

SBELTZ,
I'm planning on using my EEC-Tuner for timimg. Also, I do occasionally drive in the rain or snow, so I think I'll have to put it inside the cab.

Thanks guys,

Well, I tried to install this thing over the weekend (HI-6), and now the truck turns over, but it won't start? I checked everything about five times? The status LED lights up when the ignition is on, but when I go to crank it, it goes out? The troubleshooting guide says it's not getting a trigger signal? I got the LX-92 coil with mine, Is that the wrong one? It's got a good ground and it's getting power to both red wires. I'm really at a loss at this point, so if anyone can shed light on the problem, I'd really appreciate it?

Jake

The lx-92 should work fine for that. The first thing I'd check is to make sure my battery didn't get weak, never overlook the obvious. ;)

I'm running the HI-6S unit, a step under the the 6, it is a smaller box and fits well under the recovery tank. Comes with the 91 coil.
Running 7lbs of boost and lights the fire very well. BTW the boost retard and map sensor works with the 6S box as well. The box and coil can be had for about $160.
Had the coil go out after about a year, but even though it had a 1 year warrant Crane quickly replaced it no questions asked. Had mine on for almost 3 years now. Crane is a real standup company with gread customer service....

Brian,
I doubt it's the battery. I've got an Optima yellow top and when I try to start it - it cranks really fast. I think the problem lies in the box itself getting the trigger information, therefore it's not sending a signal to the coil to put out spark. I'm really a novice at this, but I figured if I followed the directions, it wouldn't be that hard? Thanks anyway guys, I'm going to try Crane again tommorow as they're closed today.
