Compression

Well I recently bought a compression gauge to check the health of my L. I pulled all the plugs and gave it the 3 crank test. The numbers were 90, 120, 140. All 8 cylinders were withing 10 lbs at most and all topped out at 140 on the 3rd crank.
I was noticing a bit of excessive smoke when I lay into it and it seems to burn a little oil. These numbers seem to be withing operating recomendations (no more than 75% difference according to all shop manuals). I wonder what else could be causing the smoke. Bad valve seals?????. I suspected it might be a worn set of rings, but the compression seems to still be there.
I also noticed it acting up at idle. In gear with lights and heater the volt gauge drops to the mid point. Bring the r's up to just under a grand and it is at the usual mark. Idling a little low in the cold.
Any notes on compression or causes for the smoke are appreciated.
