Brake pad recommendations

MO351

You're getting sleepy....
Might as well get this going for the data base, too. What's everyone using? I've got some metallic ones that like to sound/feel like that are grinding up the rotors. Very annoying. What should I replace them with?

Adam,

I finally went back to the dealer and bought some pads from them. I know they are supplied/made by one of the big names, but no one seemed to know who. I got them down to between 30 and 40 bucks as I recall. I had put Raybestos pads on which I do like, but they were just too noisy. I figured that It didn't make noise and feel like that when I got it so the originals would most likely be the way to go. I truly hate going back to the dealer for such things, but this is one time I did and I've been glad. I got between 40 and 50k out of the first set. It stops well and is quiet. That is good enough for me. I will be changing over to slotted rotors at the next brake change so I may try something different at that time. Good luck in your search let us know what you find out.

Chris

Try the raybestos "brute stop" pads, I've got a couple thousand on mine, and the have great stopping power. Someone also said that the "brute stop" rotors are pretty good too, and not that expensive. I think they come slotted.

I've almost gone through two sets of Raybestos "Brute Stop" front pads in just a little over 2 years and 30+K miles. Average life for me using them is 1 year and about 15,000 miles. They are a carbon metalic pad, which I love! I've read on this board before that AutoZone sells some carbon metalic front pads that have a limited? lifetime warrenty. This would sure beat replacing front pads every year. It's almost time for me to install a new set of pads, and I'm going to look into this in the next couple months. The Raybestos pads are $45? They work great, that's why I put on a second set of them, but now I'm thinking about maybe looking at trying the AutoZone pads.

If anyone is stopping with the AutoZone pads, I'd like to hear how long you've had them and how you like them.

The performance of the Brute Stop pads is awesome on the street. I haven't run them autocrossing, so don't know if they fade. A few repeated stops on the highway has made me think that they might fade a little bit, but they aren't meant for racing, just a great stopping street pad!

When my brake pads do need to be replaced, I do need to do some brake system maintence. The truck pulls to one side when I first start braking. I'm wondering about putting new seals in the calipers, cleaning the brake pistons, changing all the brake fluid to a high temp DOT4, and lubbing the slides of the calipers.

I've also wondered about an adjustable brake bias valve. I don't know how much my rear brakes are working, and I don't think the ABS is working on the rear.

I have the Performance Friction pads from AutoZone on my 93. They are the Z rated pads. I also have the Drilled rotors from NAPA and there isnt much on the road that will out stop it. Love the pads. They are the only thing Ive ever bought from Auto Zone that isnt total crap and I havent returned in a week. They ran about 49.95. Lifetime warrenty also. Good Luck

I for my pads at Auto Zone. They had two types. One with a Really good wanenty for like $35.00 and ones with a wanenty that would replace them if they cracked for $18.00. So I got the $18 ones know that they would crack. Now when they get about hafe way I am going to take a look at them and if they are cracked I am going to take them back.

As for stopping. They are ok. Work best when you heat them up just littlest bit. If you get them really hot you can tell that they have a little hard time making the truck stop. But for a everyday truck like mine that only gets raced on the 1/4 mile they are good.

Up until a little over a week ago, I ran the Performance Friction carbon metallic Z-rated linings for ~50k miles! There was at least 1/3 of the lining left on them when I removed 'em. I am generally pretty easy on brakes. However, the reason I pulled them was because I had a whole pad's worth of lining separate itself from the metal backing!!! This happened while braking and sent the pedal to the floor.....and all I had was rear brakes since all the fluid went out of the master cylinder! Fortunately, I got 'er whoa-ed up. Installed $26 Raybestos ones and will be talking to the PF engineers this week. I'm not running the PF linings any more...

Just my 2 cents. Hope this isn't common or anything.
