Blown Head gasket

Buddy of mine is all upset. We just got his afr headed motor together last month and broke in nicely. He then put his paxton back on. In many of our conversations we had talked about him getting the airflow and fuel mixture checked to see where it is. The weather has been cold and wet around here last few weeks and had a nice day yesterday. Well long story short he jumped on it and the Felpros gave up the ghost immediately. Seems he did not set the initial timing back from when he was running normally aspirated, and his boost retard was off. He limped home a couple of miles and found lots of water in the oil. Now he is woried about his bearings and lower end. I told him he should be OK. He is running synthetic oil and was careful not to put any load on the engine while in the limp mode.. Any thoughts?

Are his heads machined out for o-ringed head gaskets? It's an option on the GT-40 heads. They're alot tougher. I'd think that his bearings are ok still.

When my truck had 6000 miles on it I popped a head gasket under eerily similar conditions. But not realizing the condition of the head gasket, I proceded to drive the truck ~200 miles while pumping about 9 quarts of coolant into the crankcase (I was adding water, but thought it was all going out the tailpipe - heh).

I had Mobil 1 in the crankcase... though it looked more a like a mocha latte with a lot of green water when I drained it. ;)

55,000 miles later I rebuilt the motor and the bearings looked amazingly good. I think one of them had a particle score on it and all the rest of them looked nearly perfect.

Antifreeze will attack the copper if it's in there for any significant amount of time, but if he drove it home and drained it, I think he's in good shape.

Better a head gasket than a rod or piston!!

Jeff is right about the antifreeze, its real hard on bearings. I'm an ex buick owner, I know about head gaskets :D :D

Welcome him to the club. My first head gasket white smoke was everywere and it ran horible. I didn't really know what I did so I was haveing heart attacks as I limped a few blocks. Then I blew one two weeks ago and drove home a few miles, it ain't no thing.
