Black Smoke

Never 2 Fast

The Heartbeat STOPS here
I have a 02 and on the First start up in the mornings it blows out some black smoke ,it only does it on the first start. I can drive it let it set for a couple of hours and start it again and it dont do it. But i remember driving a 00 and when the sales man started it up right on the sales floor it did them same thing. Is this normal for a SC truck. I run 93 octane fuel and only have 1,500 miles. I know it not burning oil because its not blue smoke. Should i be concerned and take it back to the dealer, for a check. Thanx Steven

I've heard of others doing it as well. Do you give it gas before you shut off your L? Because, I think if you leave gas in the cylinders, it may cause smokey start-ups? (anyone know if this is true?)

Your rings are probablly still seating to the cylinder. When you break the motor in completey it will not happen most likely. Have you been hard on the motor during the break in. You should not hammer on it till after 500 miles. You should probablly change the oil as well now to get rid of all the impurities that are i the oil from break in.

IMHO,

it's just a little 'rich' in the air/fuel ratio at start-up. I wouldn't worry about unless it starts to run or idle 'rough'(misfiring?) which could indicate a leaking fuel injector. Watch your mpg too for an abrupt drop-off if an inj. is leaking.
