Battery Relocate

Hey guys, was wondering how many of you have moved your battery to the bed behind the right rear? Or are thinking of doing the same. I don't know what a battery weighs off hand , but am thinking a good 30lbs off the front and to the back where it is needed for traction. I'm not talking about drag trucks here but drivers.
Will it be worth the effort, time and expense?

Where Y'at Steve, I know that Red Chief put a sealed battery under the bed of his 99. Now thats cool. You can put that sucker where ever you want under the truck & even hang it upside down.

WHY did this thread come up? I just put an Optima in my truck! Now would be the perfect time to relocate it with the truck otherwise incapacitated...

Ah well, guess I'll go outside and stare at the engine compartment for the rest of the my lunch break.

I've planned on pulling the front fuel tank for weight and fuel system reasons so I think I'll have room there.

For the battery that is, not the midget.....

I still have a brand new, complete relocation kit with switch from my Mustang days. I might start looking for a place to install this...

Was under the "L" today admiring that beautiful stainless full Bassani and oh yeah taking a look see for a spot under the truck for a battery. Bottom line for me is there is no place I could find where it would be invisible from side view, without what Raymond suggests of ridding the fuel tank and I dont want to do that. What size are those Optima batteries anyway? I don't haul anything with my truck so in front of the right wheel well in the box would work. Will have to think a bit more. But the fact that adding aluminum heads and removing the Battery can lighten up the front 80 pounds is intriguing.

My main reason for ditching the front tank is to be able to run a real fuel system and not have to worry about all the fuel tank crossover BS.

Not like you care, but I had to test the new sig

Something that might help for relocating the battery under the truck is that for the ford vans with the powerstroke they put one of the batteries on the frame. You could go to your ford dealer and get the battery box from them and it would bolt right to your frame. They could also get you the cables and everything else you would need.

And yes my g/f is only 5'1"....But we won't get into her...

CURT - Did Jen Shrink? I thought She was 5'2"?..(hehehe) I've never been afraid to throw a little Gasoline on an already raging fire!!!! On the Battery relocation, with a little creative re-wiring You could move the starter solenoid from the right front wheel tub to under the cab somewhere without rewiring too much and a trip to Your local welding supply shop could get You some BIG fine strand copper cable for the hot lead & the ground. Even good hardware stores stock the stuff. It's flexible, tough and handles 100's of AMPS continuously.

as for the battery relocation, whats wrong with the bed? i know StruckBy has his in the bed, behind the right rear tire. easier access for jump starting too

hey Raymond, ive been toying with the idea of pulling the midship tank...more for weight reduction, but once its gone, is it possible to run one of them high-zoot Moostang fuel sysytems then??? if so, im suprised more havent done it
smile.gif

That's exactly it Mudd, when you go to a single tank you can run whatever fuel system you want, besides saving weight.

The battery in the bed is OK, but I don't run a cover and I don't like the idea of it or any cables/wiring being exposed to prying eyes.

Yeah, Thats the problem with having it in your bed. It may not be there when you get back. StruckBys truck ISNT a daily driver. It stays in the garage most of the time. It is a very easy way to mount it, but, there are some drawbacks. If you put anything in the bed, it must be tied down so it doesnt slam into the battery box, too.
