Bad night at the track!

Well.....I finally was able to get a few runs on my truck. It was pretty depressing.:( 1st run...15.04@91.40mph, 2nd run.....15.01@92.35mph, and the final pass was a ugly 15.06@92.49mph!!
The reason why I'm so upset is because my truck is not stock!!! My mods are AFR alluminum heads, 65mm throttlebody, march underdrive pulleys, Bassani headers, magnaflow mufflers dumped at rear (but stock y-pipe). The tranny is modified with a HARD shifting shift kit, My fuel pressure is set at 42lbs and my timing is stock. I had just changed my plugs, cap/rotor and installed an msd6a. I was even running a short belt to bypass the powersteering!!!!! The truck seemed to be running o.k. and the weather was cool.....What gives!!!?
I'm so down about it right now, what can I do to get this thing running as fast as it should?
I'm also running a small elbow at the throttlebody with a conical k&n, and Ive raised the snubber at the leaf spring.

A lil more info is gonna help like :tu: what gear ya got(differential) what size tire...whats yur 60 fts.....what size injectors are ya runnin and do ya have an aftermarket chip.....????etc etc. Yu got some good stuff..but its not what ya got..its how yu put it together..the truck is in the area for speed compared to E.T....actually yu should be in the 14.7 or so range with traction....But with all that head(big runners or small .ie 220 runners etc etc??? )yu need fuel and a personality to deliver it( ie theChip)...that T.B. and that ignition will demand more fuel..The msd aint hurtin ya butttttt it could if its leanin ya out...Hows yur bottom 1/2..fresh not leakin down from alot of milage??? there are alot of factors....Buttttt i didnt see ya mention a Chip...I make a move for it,,,Itll change fuel delivery, ignition curve, and maybe even hop up the shift points to jive with new found power....Yu gotta watch out when ya do things in big #'s(ie injectors,heads,t.b.etc etc )All at once...the combo may not be right if there is 1 key player missin.....PCM or chip(dependin on what ya drive) if its a Gen1.....and yu be back on track,,Gotta remember...Yu bringin air in and spendin it pretty good...But what do your plugs look like(color, burn travel on electrode etc)...They tell ya the whole story...

dont give up .....yull get it...Yur truck is tellin ya what to do,yu just gotta read it....:D

keep surfin my braddah

yeah that does suck man, my truck runs the same mph, 92.47, but 1/2 second faster and its pretty much stock except for exhaust and a K&N and pulleys

are you letting the truck shift itself or shifting it manually? do you have a stock camshaft? if so id let the truck shift on its own but you should probably try experimenting if you havent. also have you tried more initial timing? if not you should bump it up to 15 or 16° initial, you might be surprised at the difference.

lastly did you install the heads and other parts or were they already on the truck? if you did install them did you notice any difference?

I'm running the 4.10s with a 275/55/17 rear tire.I'm running stock injectors, no chip that I'm aware of...(previous owner did the majority of the mods like the heads & tranny and he was running a blower). I'm shifting manually at 5000rpm with the o/d off. I rolled out the hole easy on the first and third pass...on the second, I just hammered it and the ***-end was hopping all over the place. The truck as 60,000 miles on it. The truck pulls hard out of the hole but feels a little weak on the top end side.

I would talk to Raymond he can set u up with an EEC tuner and get a set up for your truck........ I have heard nothing but good things about him...........

I met up with FMOSracing (Jeff) out there at sac raceway...Man his truck is awesome! Oh what was I saying...Oh ya, He was showing me the eec tuner and all the different things you can do with it. It looks Really useful to be able to adjust and tune everything from right there. I think besides an offroad exhaust that the tuner will be the next purchase!

For my .02, check the fuel pressure and reset your timing to 16*. If you dont have a fuel pressure gauge, go buy one. Its a mandatory tuning tool. You should be putting 42psi, or so, w/o vacuum. This would be a good starting point.
It is definately laying down on the top end. You should be pulling at LEAST 97mph.
Next, I always get the best results with the truck shifting itself. Mine doesnt like to be shifted manually. Let it do its thing.
How old are the plugs and associated ignition components?
And lastly, if your not running some type of drag tire, dont worry too much about the ET. Tune the truck for MPH. Thats the reflection of horsepower. ET is all about traction, and loads of it. :D Hope this helps.

Me and Jeff got talking about you,his truck, and the whole situation..

What you're failing to realize is the weather SUCKED!! It was foggy which means 100% humidty.. Jeff with his AFR heads, 393, and all the other stuff only ran a 13.5.. It was in the weather and the track.. Water doesn't burn to good ya know..

Get a cool DRY night and I bet you'd lose close to a second with traction... I would KILL for that MPH right now, but I also don't have $1300 heads..

Thanks you guys for the input!!! I'm going to go buy another fuel pressure gauge today....My old one broke about a month ago. I'll start messing with the fuel and timing and see where it takes me. Then I need to find an offroad pipe....then eec-tuner here I come!!!

John's truck isn't as fast as it should be even considering the conditions, but Curt is right. He neglected to mention that besides being cool, it was foggy and water doesn't burn too well. It was also lousy for traction and on my final two passes I could hook the drag radials, a problem I didn't even have with 600+ horsepower.

Based on what I saw other people run and heard from other drivers, everyone was down a couple of mph and traction was lousy. For example, I saw modified TT 300ZX run a 14.0s, a TT Supra run a 14.3, a supercharged EFI 5.0 in a 66 Mustang body (I think I wet myself when he started it up and I heard the Vortech) ran 13.90s, most of the LS1 F-bods were running high 13s/low 14s. Stock C5 Vettes were running high 13s.

Actually, as I sit here thinking about it, if we tack on 2 mph for conditions, and another 1 or 2 for getting the timing turned up and ditching the stock X-pipe, suddenly we're at the 96-97 mph mark and that's well within the realm of reason for John's truck's combo.

FWIW, my truck didn't run as well as I expected, either. I managed to get 101 mph out of it, but I think it's running rich. Time to get the wide band installed and a EASE setup from Ray and get to some serious tuning. I really want to see 105 on the motor before installing the turbo.

People were pretty amazed at the 13.55 dial-in. The first guy I ran was in some loud Nova with a piss-on-Ford sticker on the back. He saw my tailgate most of the way down the track (he did tree me). He found me later in the staging lanes and was pretty stunned by the truck. He asked if it was blown? No. Nitous? No. Big block? No. Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn. LOL! Chevy boys... Wait until they see what's coming.... ;)
