autometer EGT gauge, the thing to have?

What ya'll think, worth while to get? I'm talking about the street kit, gauge cable and probe. Is this the thing to have or should I look elsewere for an EGT gauge.

2654 Street Series EGT Kit (0°-1600°F)
Includes Probe and 8 1/2 ft of thermocouple wire.

In the center if you couldn't figure it out ;) .

Probly just have to drill a hole in the headers somewere(sugjestions on spot please) and weld it in? Probly real close to the head in #1 cyl header tube?

Heres the listing on summit for it.

I guess it's pretty much a pyrometric gauge and cable all in one instead of haveing to buy both seperate. It's better togeather they want like 100 something for the gauge and almost 80 for a cable, this kit is 111 for both. GJLS, what are you running? You have some sort of data logger thing going also?

Thats the one I have and it seams to work ok.....I watch it go up to 1600 and then go home and pull my heads to change the head gaskets :m

The data loger I use is the ease diagnostics that I got from Raymond (Thanks Raymond :D ) It really opened my eyes to what is going on and I think it's a great tool for someone who tunes there own truck

So what's our EGT supposed to be on these trucks? Anything in particular? You talk about your head gaskets, Jerry, so when the temp goes way up that tells you that you blew a gasket??? How's that work? Sounds like the EGT gauge is a must on blown applications.

If you use the EGT, I've heard that you want to place it in the leanest cylinder of the 8. I believe it is #7, but don't quote me without another source. I know it is not #1 though, so don't put it there.

Well mine keeps blowing #8 so for me thats the leanest cyl.

My exhaust temp at wot should be 1400-1500 and if it hits 1600 it results in a blown head gasket

But it's not easy to watch the guage I think the best thing would be some kind of warning lite

#8 for you huh jerry? I always have problems with #3. Maybe #1 was the leanest for mustangs and thats what I was thinking. I don't have the gauge yet. I'm just thinking.

computech EGT

Here is my O2 cents worth. I have the Computech digital EGT meter with a recall button. That way you can push recall at the 1/4 end to see max temp thru the traps. My probe is in the #5 cylender, It is common for me to see 1600+ temps and have seen 1658* one time. The guy who mounted it says that #5 is the hottest cylender on a SB ford, at least on his twin turbo 93 LX . My truck runs great so far:eek: at cruising speed, 65 MPH I see 1310* at idle 880* I pais $300 and it is held in place with velcro on the dash front.
