Auburn Diffs

I have heard if it's not the auburn pro don't buy it...most say you would be better off rebuilding the t-lok

There's quite a few on the market these days (eaton, true trac, torsen, etc) that are as good as the auburns and either don't have to be rebuilt or can be rebuilt. The prices are close to the same or alittle more. The standard auburn has been known to go out in 15K miles depending on the abuse factor. The pro has been known to chatter around turns if it doesn't break in correctly but is a good diff that will last awhile. Niether can be rebuilt.

Yeah..I had a guy email me and offer me a regular Auburn with gear oil and friction modifier:rolleyes: for $265... I'm thinking of just going with an Eaton and calling it a day..

Curt,

My brother has an Auburn Pro in his Lightning and it.....sucks. I've killed a standard Auburn in a lightweight Mustang. And no, I wasn't doing stupid things to kill it. :)

Eaton, all the way. Torsen if you wanna do a road course and have a fatter wallet.

Later!

The whole rearend with the auburn pro was pulled from my friends ol blown 351windsor mustang. The car ran low,low 10's with it, and its working great in my mustang

Well now I've got a guy that wants to sell me his Auburn Pro for $275(brand new).. I still don't know though.. I can get a Eaton for $345 from Reider, I think I'll just splurge for the good rearend that I know I can rebuild if the need comes. For that 75 bucks the piece of mind that comes from not being SOL if I fry a clutch is worth it.. Plus they're putting them in new Lightning's I've heard... Or maybe I'll just rebuild the T-lok again... But I just sold one of my RC cars and such, so maybe that'll go towards an Eaton.. I'm just totally sick of dealing with the rear end..

Also is a rear cover really worth it? Do they really help? Apprearance really isn't an issue for me because you really can't see it underneath the factory bumper...

theres a little place in Westfield, Mass called "Wzoreks"
He is one of the best Differential builders around. I got referred to him by who owned one tall and powerful truck (Monster Trucks).
He told me to keep away from the Torsen and PowerTrax.
Wzoreks built a regular Auburn for my V8 Ranger and I never had a problem with it.
Then last year I upgraded to an Auburn Pro in my Lightning, I run at the track alot and now with 12,000 miles its doing fine. I have no complaints with the Auburns.

good luck with your choice.

The Auburn sucks...

Curt,

The Auburn is an OK unit, it doesn't totally suck like Kevin said. I noticed an improvement with it over the stock traction loc, but that isn't saying much. Usually it pulls both wheels great. There are times, however that it will do a one wheel peel - such as in backing up in a muddy portion of the driveway around the barn....

Unlike the traction-loc, I have no problem running the Auburn until I can change it out permanently (Detroit (???) ;) or Eaton (most likely) or Torsen (might as well buy a Detroit considering the $$$)). If it does go totally bad, at least there are no "ears" from the clutch pack floating around trying to destroy the ring gear and pinion...

Moral of the story- its not cheap enough to take the gamble, get something better. JUST GET THAT TRACTION LOC OUT OF THERE BEFORE IT WIPES EVERYTHING OUT!

For everyone else,

Hmmm... As I'm typing this there is this lingering question - they do make a Detroit Locker for an 8.8, right?

Well I still think it sucks. You won't find me running one in anything. Disclaimer: There are people that have had good luck with Auburns - more power to ya. I just don't like 'em at all. :)

Yes, they make a Detroit for the 8.8. You can just stick my spare Eaton in yours. If I blow up the Torsen, I'll be fitting a 9" with a Detroit in there.

Later,

I would say alot of problems people are experiencing, are either assembly or not using friction modifier. My Auburns have always run great. The only problem I had was I could not get one, mine was on back order, I later found out that was because GM was buying them. Run what ever you want, just make damn sure install it correctly.

Kevin, you say you have a spre Eaton, would you contimplate selling it?? I think I'm going to go with an Eaton.. It'll probably be 2-3 week in March before I spring for it, depending on how much money I have after spring break...

Back to the leadership conference...grrrrr

im using a detroit locker in my truck. its a very beefy unit. weighs almost double the stock carrier. its never failed me at the track either and i run slicks and a stall convertor. its basically a spool when engaged. you get the occasional cluck on accel and in turns but its no bother. id say for draging the truck its the best , strongest unit on the market. i got mine for 500$ from randys ring and pinion. i did extensive shopping and this was the best price i found. the powertrax is good but its only as strong as the carrier it goes into. and the stock unit is a fairly thin casting and they tend to break when real torque is applied to them. and for the price of over 400$ you might as well get the detroit.:tu:

I've had good luck with power-trax. I put one in my 86 mustang and one in my 5.0 pinto. They're a little jerky but they do the job and I can't see how one would wear out. Detroit lockers are good too, but they will cost you an arm and a leg.

theres not that much price difference between a powertrax and a detroit locker. less than 100$. and if you look at what youre getting. the locker is far superior in my opinion.
