A/C compressor!!!

Shooting for 11's Now...
Well guys I had to go to Wal-Mart(Anti-christ supercenter) tonight to get a few things. On the way there I was enjoying my new level 10 tranny and converter and having a good time. When I pulled in to the parking lot my truck started making a horrible squeling sound and on top of that it smelled like burnt peanut butter(WTH). Anyway I popped the hood and it turns out my a/c pump had burned the clutch up. Is there any way to replace the clutch w/out buying a whole new pump? Also would it hurt to drive around for awhile with it in its current condition as long as I don't cut on the defrosster or a/c? Thanks guys.

My L did that a couple years ago. I don't think its the clutch but the compressor itself. Try to turn the center by hand, if you can't the compressor locked up. Just unplug the compressor clutch at the compressor and it will go for a while until you come up with $200 for a new compressor, $6 for a new orfice tube (they get full of metal w/ comp. failure), $60 for a new accumulator (if switching from R-12 to R-134a), and whatever it costs to charge system. Wish I had better news for you.

Keep us posted.

Hey, I think that you can replace just the clutch assembly...I think autozone has it...but Im not positive. This happened to me about two months ago the truck started to smell real bad I thought it was my level 10 trans...so I pulled over and my A/C clutch was at the point were it was glowing red. I tried to start it so i could get to autozone and get a belt to bypass it and the truck would not even run....I ended up having to take the belt off and make a run for autozone...I was only about a 1/2 mile away, but it seemed like for ever. They said it went out from lack of use. I have only uesd it about 8-10 times since I bought it (94 lightning). LOL so I just bypassed it for now....Thanks Craig

Sorry for the novel...LOL

I've Heard

I've heard of someone on here replacing the clutch plates but don't remember much about it. I had the same thing happen to me. I just went to ford and ordered the pulley and bearing assembly. I believe it was like $80 dollars. I unhooked the electrical connector on top and now it is just a pulley but I would be interested in the clutch assembly replacement because when I pulled the pulley off I could see the clutch plates were fried. I'd be interested in replacing my clutch plates. Hope that someone that did this posts here.

On an A/C compressor there is no lining on the plates (metal to metal). Have you tried to turn the center part of the pulley, when engaged it turns with the belt. If it doesn't rotate easily by hand then your compressor is locked up. I'd say your clutch is still working, but slipping because of the noise and drag on the motor. Also since you said the truck acts & sounds normal with the compressor unplugged you didn't seize the pulley bearing.

From my expirence its your compressor, sorry for the bad news.
