2002 Hyundai Accent

OK, getting myself excited. In the last pennysaver (a small classifieds paper) I saw a printed ad for a 2002 Hyundai Accent, for $5000. I just ignored it as a misprint, and threw the paper out. Then I saw a TV ad, and yup, the MSRP is $9000, but they're selling the base model this weekend only for $5490 - $500 rebate (so $4990 + t/t/freight). Holy crap. We're heading down tomorrow to get the details, and see what they have. I think the fine print says that we have to use their lending service, sigh. But, let's see if they come through for us. We can put $1500 down (engine rebuild/swap money), and get out of there with a $120/month payment on a new car, and park the Lightning most days.

I work for a car dealer and you can get them used at auctions for pennys on the dollar. Last week there was a 2000 accent with just over 60,000 miles on it and it went for $1,300 and there was no visable damage and it seemed to run fine.

don't they have that 10 yr, 100,000 mi. warranty? i mean junk is junk but if they're willing to back it with that kind of warranty i'd say it's worth it. JMO.-chris

I had heard the junk comment before, but in the same sentence that the last two years Hyundai has been trying to turn that around and produce good cars. But, yeah, 10year/100k mile warranty definately helps :)

What classifies them as junk? THis is interesting to me, because if you say it is junk because you'll have it in the shop every month, then you just called my Lightning junk.

Alright now...

Everyone stop take a breath and count to three. Now, doesn't that feel better? JJ, you might want to count to ten.:tu:
And CobraYankee, why haven't you done anything to that truck yet? What the he// are you waiting for:confused:
Do like I do, drop the truck and a signed check off to JJ and tell him to have fun.:D J/K I wish.
Later...

A signed, blank check, of course :)

And I do appreciate your comments, JJ, it has given me some thought. BTW, still considering selling that Integra? I offered my wife, but she was iffy on it :D Right now I'm in full speed mode to get a 3rd car. The Lightning is just driving me nuts right now. Everyday I'm finding myself more in need of a vacation from it, especially now that it's developed a nasty squeak (that chirping noise). Maybe 100ft of Dynamat will make it better.

Brian, a nother car for daily use is the right choice. But make that choice wisely!! I bought a 1981 Toyota Corona(102K) for $200.00 when I had my 85 black GT convertable and it saved that car from 2 winters and 18K miles! Then I bought the L and the Toy was sold a month later. I got a 1987 Dodge 4x4 Power Ram to replace the rustota. The dodge is a "dodge" but it was VERY cheap(can you say FREE) and only had 91K on it. It has saved the L from almost 2 winters now and almost 15K miles! I drive ALOT!!! It has cost me almost nothing in repairs. And the 4x4 is nice in the snow. I have just bought another beater for a backup to my backup. A 1988 Mazda 626 4 door for $125.00. Has 180K on it but runs VERY smooth! And gets MUCH better gas mileage than the dodge! 11mpg to over 25mpg! I will drive the Mazda till it dies(summer/winter/fall/spring) and still have the dodge for the winter snow! Sooo, now my L has 2 backups!! My main goal is to keep 100K miles as far away from the L as possible! It has 77K now. So if you buy the right kind of old beater for the right price you will still have most of your $1500.00 mod $$ and saving the L for sunday afternoons!:tu: When the $150-200 beater gets a major problem you ditch it and buy another! Figure $300.00 a year for say even 4 years(4 different cars) and you have saved yourself $3800.00 at least by not getting that Hyundai that will take just as much repare $$ as a cheap beater!! Get what I am saying here!:w

No deep breaths needed. This is actually a civilized discussion/debate between some of us that know each otehr one way or another. My truck may have only been to your shop once, but it's been to the dealer countless times. And it needs to go in again. I wouldn't take it to a private shop since there is a warranty to do it for free, just like a Hyundai will have. And as for resale being crap on a Hyundai, when you're only paying about $6,000 to start, who cares if you only get $1,500 after 5 years. That's 5 years of free labor for anything that does go wrong, with 5 years of great gas mileage, and 5 years in a car that isn't beaten on or rusted out. You guys have to remember that it may not look like a Ferrari or anything, but it does look better than a 10-15 year old car that he'll pick up for $250. You have to look at it through his wife's eyes. I doubt she wants to roll around in a car that's 10 years old if she has the chance to jump in a 2002.
Hey Black, I was all set to mod 2 weeks ago, but I had an unplanned tire purchase that I had to make. I really only NEEDED two due to unrepairable holes, but I had no tread on the other two so I went and bought all four at once. That was a chunk of change since I didn't have time to shop around. Oh well, I started saving again.

Well, kind of gave up on the idea. The idea just suddenly hit home that if I were to get a 3rd car, I'd be better off with a sub $1000 beater, just to get to work and back. (Found a '87 CRX, MD inspected, for $900/obo, woo). I'm sure I could've gotten their financing, and refinanced, but they'd probably throw something in the fine print about penalty for early pay-out :(

Now hold on.... I like many of you have this predetermined idea of Hyundai. BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!
A buddy of mine(SpeedRules2) just bought one and I was very Impressed with it. It was very refined, drove quite nice and had a respectable amount of power to make driving fun. All for about $11,500. NOT BAD.

Time will tell, however, about the overall quality of the car. The motor and tranny felt tight and like I said the ride was very comfy. Give the car a chance. Don't knock it 'till you've tried it.

I am not saying it is a better car than a Camry, Maxima, or Taurus or....... but for the money it is very capable.

Just my $.02!:tu:

I wasn't too impressed with it. Maybe just because I'm used to the L and my Crown Vic. Leg space seemed very sparse (though not as bad as those dodge knee-on's), and seemed a little rough wise, either from the engine or suspension, I don't know. This was the one I test drove, may be different from others, but bleah I say. Cheap is as cheap does, and even frugalness has it's limits :D

Jason: Thanks for the comments. I purchased an Elantra, not an Accent. I think the thread began with something about the Accent. I was always a little suspect of the cars too. After a couple of test drives I really was impressed with the car. Not only was it inexpensive it came with a ton of standard equipment; PW,PL,Tilt,AM/FM CASS, 140 HP, five speed, and more. The Taurus was a piece and the tranny was doing funny things like not shifting. The Taurus only had 49,000 on it and was noisy, shifted bad, the sunroof broke, and on and on. The Elantra is not as good as a Corolla, Sentra, or probably even the Focus that I also have. It should provide good transportation for the next five to six years. Oh and by the way the warranty includes not only 10yr/100,000 mile powertrain but also 5yr/60000 mile bumper to bumper and 5yr/Unlimited mileage road side assistance. During the first year if the windshield wipers so much as mess up they will replace them for free. I drove a 93-94 Elantra and promised I would never look at one again, that thing was nasty. Well I gave them a second chance and they have really turned a corner the last five years. Somebody said the materials were cheap, I guarantee you that the interior materials in the Elantra are nicer than the materials used in the Focus, for whatever that's worth. Hey to each his own. I hope I don't get banished for buying a Korean car. At least I financed through Ford Motor Credit HAHAHA. Later Jeremy

Check with state laws. I know that in Michigan you Cannot be penalized for early payoff of ANY legal contract. So even if it's in the contract and you sign it, it makes no difference. Your state is prolly the same.

Well we're in Maryland. A whole different world. They tax us on the oxygen we breath, and it seems as though the retailers and merchants can do what they want. MARYLAND
A couple of years and I'll be gone! :tu:
